Comments about REI Halo +40 Sleeping Bag - Long:

I just purchased this Halo +40 men's long sleeping bag for a great price using my REI dividend and discount coupon, so this is a "features only" review at this point. I bought this bag to do compact, lightweight, warm weather backpacking in the American Southwest. I will update my review after I field test this bag in actual conditions. A storage bag and nicely-made stuff sack are included in the price.

The ripstop shell is very lightweight, made from partially recycled polyester--nice and slippery inside to help you move around. The lighter weight fabric will require some care against snagging it on sharp objects, but worth it for the silky comfort and weight savings. I bought the long length for a little extra wiggle room and it is perfect. I am 5 ft. 11 in., 190 lbs., and the cut is fine, with plenty of room to move around inside the bag. It doesn't feel restrictive to me at all.

The hood is preshaped. The inside draft tube runs up the side along the zipper and then continues inside the neck and hood openings, forming a nice collar to help trap warm air inside the bag. The neck/hood openings are adjusted with a cordlock and two drawstrings, one flat, one round, so you can tell the difference by touch in the dark. There is a zippered pocket outside the neck to store small items. The bottom of the bag has sewn-on loops on the outside for pad straps as well.

The small-tooth, two-way, lightweight zipper runs most of the way down the side of the bag and can also be unzipped from the bottom. Both the draft tube AND the other side of the zipper opening have a heavier nylon backing strip sewn on them to help prevent zipper snags. Due to the lightweight shell, it can still snag if you are not careful, but it works smoothly for me just by holding the zipper straight when pulling the slider, not a big deal at all. When you lay this bag out, the zipper actually runs along the bottom edge of the side of the bag, not down the middle of the side.

According to REI, all three versions of their Halo series sleeping bags are made with 750-fill down. The down tubes on the top of the bag are baffled and then there are additional, vertical tubes with baffles around the sides and foot of the bag. On the +40 Halo only, the down tubes on the BOTTOM of the bag are sewn-through, NOT baffled, in keeping with a lightweight bag designed for warmer temperatures. In contrast, both the Halo +25 and +10 models are fully baffled on the bottom for their colder applications.

This Halo +40 packs nice and small, fitting easily into the provided stuff sack with room to spare for a sleeping bag liner or other small items. I was able to fit it into an extra small compressor stuff sack as well. For 2009, REI is now using the newer, EN sleeping bag temperature rating testing protocol for their bags (see the REI wesite for more details).

At 1 lb. 9 oz., if this Halo +40 bag performs as good as it looks, it will be a great addition to my outdoor gear.

Comments about REI Halo +40 Sleeping Bag - Long:

This is the best 3 season bag I have ever owned. I am a big guy (6'4" and 260, Size 13 EEE foot) and this bag has more than enough room in my shoulder and foot area.

Extremely warm but does not condensate. Because this bag is so lightweight you need to make sure you get a good pad.

Spend a few dollars and buy one of the REI compression sack and get ready to be amazed at how small this bag can get.

    Highly recommend this bag.
