Comments about REI Halo +40 Sleeping Bag - Regular:
I forgot to comment on the shell material. I know a previous reviewer said it was 'cheap.' No so! The exterior shell and interior are ripstop polyester, NOT nylon. This is tough stuff that is both, thermally efficient and a lot softer than nylon. (also not as photo-reactive to UV light as nylon.) A great choice for this type of bag. I do my research and know my gear -- if everyone did the same before commenting these reviews would be more valuable to readers.

Comments about REI Halo +40 Sleeping Bag - Regular:
Within two days of buying this bag...it was put to use in Mt. Mitchell State Park near Asheville, NC. (6684.ft)
On my trip I used the Halo with a Thermarest Z-foam pad on the ground and in one of my Hennessy Hammocks. Temperatures ranged from 67, clear and mild wind to 33, dense cloud cover and up to 60 mph gusts of wind.
The very first night I bivyed and slept on my pad under the stars...around 2 in the morning it began to rain. The bag was minimally wet but still retained its temp rating when I was able to set up a tarp shelter.
The second night was spent in 50-60 mph gusts of wind and the temp fell and rose between 33 and 40 degrees. I was also off the ground in a hammock. The Halo held up magnificently and kept me warm throughout. My feet did get a little chilled when the temp. dropped below 38 or so.
In regards to previous reviews...the bag did what it is designed to do. All down garments will leak here and there and to save on weight, the shell is perfect to protect one from dirt and debris as well as be very compact and soft. I do not think these are reasons to dislike this bag. I was looking for a light bag that could be used down to freezing temperatures because I carry 20lbs or less including water for most all my three season trips. This bag offers the versatility of being light with the warmth of down...period.

Comments about REI Halo +40 Sleeping Bag - Regular:
I read the negative reviews but don't understand them. This bag rocks. It's like sleeping in a full sized down sweater. It's so light and small I throw it in my pack for day trips "just in case". It's rating is accurate but I sleep hot and can use it down to freezing. I was going to pay[$]more for a different brand with a 35 degree rating and I'm glad I didn't. Great bag and price and it fits my nearly 6 ft. 240 pound body which many bags don't. Make sure you have a decent sleeping pad with a good R rating if you want to use it in the fourth season (snow) like I did, because the down will flatten a bit underneath you.

Comments about REI Halo +40 Sleeping Bag - Regular:
I first used this bag on a 5 day trip up the Bowman Lake trail in Glacier National Park. It was the last week of August and the temps dipped down around freezing on a few of the nights and was in the 70s on others.
Using a Sea to Summit Reactor liner this bag handled both the warm temperatures and the cold like a champ.
It's light, HIGHLY compressible, and when paired with a good liner is perfect for 3-season backpacking. Bottom line, I'm very happy with this product and have no problem standing by it.

Comments about REI Halo +40 Sleeping Bag - Regular:
I picked up this bag to use when camping with scouts or just my boys in the spring to fall timeframe. I have a synthetic 3-season 40 degree bag and it does not pack up as small as I would like. This bag packs up smaller than I expected in a medium sized eVent stuff sack. I am going to get a small eVent stuff sack for this sleeping bag. Some of the reviews commented on zipper snags. Never had a problem during the first weekend I used the bag. It has heavier strips of material sewn into both sides of the bag to prevent/reduce zipper snags. Did not see any loose feathers inside the tent after two days. Recommend this bag for anyone looking for a warm and highly compressable 3-season bag.

Comments about REI Halo +40 Sleeping Bag - Regular:
I believe in the old saying "ounces equal pounds and pounds equal pain" so I try to go as small and light as possible while still staying comfortable and not breaking the bank. This bag when paired with a small stuff sack (purchased separately) compacts down to the size of an overstuff Chipotle burrito. I'm a cold sleeper but with just a pair of long johns on I was comfortable on my self-inflating mattress at about 45 degrees. I'm sure many could be comfortable going lower. I've had no problems with the outer shell and I liked the Halo 40 so much I just bought the Halo 10!

Comments about REI Halo +40 Sleeping Bag - Regular:
I used this bag during my service term with Conservation Corps Minnesota working in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness for the summer. This was my first experience with a down sleeping bag. I am a fan.
Having to carry/portage all of our group gear, food and tools, my favorite qualities about the bag is its light weight and compressibility. The bag compresses even smaller than its stuff sack size. You could use a small compression sack if you wanted but I found the extra room to be just enough to stow a cool-max mummy bag liner.
The bag is also very comfy. I'm 6 feet 180 pounds so worried about it not being long enough but it sufficed and it was also sufficiently roomy. However I would think 6 feet is about the upper threshold for fitting in a regular so I would recommend anyone over 6 feet to consider the long version. The shell material is also comfortable against bare skin and although it is very thin it hasn't ripped anywhere and I wouldn't expect it to unless I do something stupid to it.
The bag is also very warm. I actually considered listing this as a con under "inaccurate temp rating" because I suspect it is warmer than +40, but it might just be me because I am a fairly warm sleeper. Over the course of the summer we had a handful of nights/mornings in June and late August where it dipped below freezing yet I was snug as a bug in my bag paired with a cool-max mummy liner which only adds about 5-10 degrees of warmth. Many nights I was too warm to even get in my bag at all.
A couple mornings I noticed the foot of my bag collected condensation but only on the outside; my feet stayed dry. My tent mates also had fun finding down feathers every once and a while. The down doesn't poke though and the down leaking seems very minimal so I'm not really worried about losing all the fill. The zipper also is not a breeze to deal with. I often had to unsnag it or guide the zipper with my fingers or other hand to prevent snagging which is a little annoying when I zipped up the bag later in the night once I had cooled down.
Overall I really like this bag and would recommend it. I am not familiar with any of the other down bags similar to the Halo so I can't compare it but this bag was great and I am happy to use in the future.

Comments about REI Halo +40 Sleeping Bag - Regular:
Used this bag once, and returned to REI. The zipper snagged each time I had to zip or unzip. A couple times during the night, I had to wakeup my girlfriend to help me out!! I also found it too cold - but not the fault of the bag. I was in a central florida campsite during an unusually cold night and though I was wearing jeans, socks, long sleeve T, I was still cold, ended up adding a jacket, which allowed me to at least get to sleep, but I was still chilled.
I returned to REI after cleaning and received excellent service and refund - replaced with warmer rated bag.

Comments about REI Halo +40 Sleeping Bag - Regular:
After taking this bag out of my compression sack on the first night out with it and i had little pieces of down poking out of the bag two places in the seams and one in the shell itself. Not a good sign, it is decently lightweight (not ultralight) but it was cold! I sleep warm and at 42 it was drafty and cold even with extra clothing. I ended having to boil up some water put it in my nalgene to warm the inside of the bag enough to get to sleep.
