by fromThe New valves are bad I have purchased two pads. The first lasted for five years before the top layer (green side)started leaking. I purchased another July 2012 and the new valves are too hard to use, It takes me 5 minutes and numerous failed attempt to get the valve to actually stay closed. It also only inflates to half the rise of my other pad. I had nerve damage to my hand last year and it is about 60 % of what it used to be. I have no troubles with the old valves. The new ones are half the size about 1/2 inch tall. I do not recommend these new pads, the old ones are great.

by fromA phenomenal piece of junk REI needs to vigorously field test their gear before selling it. I purchased one of these self inflating pads several years ago and it held up pretty well the first couple of seasons camping throughout Alaska and Canada but it developed a leak in one the valves so I returned it this past May and they gave me a new one. The new pad worked well for a couple of months and then started leaking worse than the original one. This morning, I was at a nice lake with clear clean water and I decided to give it the bubble test to determine where it was leaking. To my astonishment, I discovered literally dozens of tiny air leaks bubbling all over the top. Surprizingly, there were no leaks found on the bottom. When I got my new replacement pad the first thing I noticed was they had changed the material on the top of the pad to something smoother and softer than what was on the original pad. The material used on the bottom still remains the same. In my opinion, they should have left the original material on top alone, this is not an improvement at all, the new material has developed leaks everywhere. You can't see them or hear them, but if you put the pad in water you will be amazed at all the tiny bubbling leaks you find. I will be returning this pad to REI when this lseason is over, meanwhile I have to find a substitute to get me through another month as I'm in Yukon and nowhere near an REI store.

by fromSo comfy...until it leaks My husband and I both got these pads and used them a few times. They both started to leak within a few weeks of one another. We submerged the pads to find tiny holes all over each of them. We blamed the cat (we had the pads inflated in the house for a time) and got new pads. (While the pads were staying fully inflated, they were THE most comfortable pads we had ever slept on, so we wanted to give them another chance.) Unfortunately, we had the same problem with the new pads. We took good care of these and didn't let the cat near them, so this must be an endemic problem. We are so disappointed! If REI could fix this problem, they would be the most perfect sleeping pad.

by fromSo comfortable, so poorly made I took this pad down the grand canyon this spring. For two weeks it was a dream, but then it started leaking. I figured it was a small puncture somewhere, but when I got home and put it in the tub - holes all over the top. None on the bottom. I see others have had this problem. Though the soft surface on top is nice, I think it is trapping grit against the pad and wearing holes in it. Poor field testing, REI. I was thinking about giving it a second chance, but after reading the similar complaints I am going to exchange it for the thermarest luxury pad.

by fromDo not buy I bought this for use while on a deployment. It never stayed inflated for an entire night. As soon as I returned from deployment took it back to REI and purchased a different brand.

by fromHate to do this... I really hate to have to write such a bad review for this sleeping pad but both mine have developed leaks on the bottom 12 inches of the green materiel. I only used these pads four or five times and I stored them indoors with the valves open in accordance with the storage directions. I am glad that I bought these from REI because I know this has to be some type of manufacturing defect. I plan on returning them and getting the same pad again, however I wanted to let everyone know in case they have the same issue. When they worked they were very comfortable...even for my wife who was 6 months pregnant when we camped last time. Hope to leave a better review after a few trips on the replacement pads.

by fromNeeds Some Quality-Control Two complaints: (1) Will not remain inflated overnight; and (2) Lack of non-slip surface material. I went through two of these beds in less than a year due to deflation issues -- I finally gave up on the product. The deflation issues were not as a result of puncture or hard use -- just slow leaks that left me laying on the hard ground in the morning. That is a quality-control issue. Also, the lack of a true non-slip surface material makes for a difficult time staying on the pad over the course of a night -- I solved this problem by using the trick of applying some small beads of silicone caulk to the pad surface. The pad was very comfortable, however -- as long as it was inflated.

by fromnot the same 3.5" pad from 2 years ago This is not the same 3.5" sleeping pad. I have 2 older ones from 2 years ago. The older ones weigh about 5.5 lbs, and are much more comfortable. The new one weighs 5.0 lbs and is not as dense and the edges are rounded more so it is much easier to slide off. Looks like REI is trying to save money by cutting down on the amount of material to make the pad. Looks like I will have to return it and find something more similar to the old REI 3.5" pads. Maybe I can find the old ones on [...]? Too bad REI is more worried about profit margins than quality. I was really disappointed it was not the same quality pad as the ones I bought 2 years ago. I use to bragg about how they were the best pads. Not any more!
