Comments about Outdoor Research Coastal Sombrero:
This is the best outdoor hat I've owned. The stiff but flexible brim is great. The hat can be positioned and left alone. You can then look any direction and nothing gets in the way, the way a floppy brim might.
It's been worn in steady rain but not downpours but works great in the steady rain. When hiking or paddling in sun it wasn't too hot. On windy days pull up the chin strap and adjust the head circumference cord and the hat stays put.
It's been crumpled up and stuffed in a backpack and a waterproof bag. When it was brought out to wear it went right back into shape with no problems. The initial fit made me nervous the wind would blow it right off but that didn't happen.
Floating has never been tested and hopefully never will be.

Comments about Outdoor Research Coastal Sombrero:
I took this to Central America during the rainy season, and it performed very well. Light, easy to fold and carry in pack, and keeps water off your head and neck. The Seattle Sombrero is too hot for the tropics and has no vent. This hat is the perfect combination of rain/sun hat.
Getting this type of hat in your size is better than one size fits all. I tried an adjustable, one size fits all by another brand, but it kept flopping down on my ears unless I adjusted it uncomfortably tight around my head.
The only thing I would change is to add the option to fasten the sides up like the Seattle Sombrero for some extra style points.
