Comments about Reliance Water-Pak Water Container - 5 gal.:
This is great to have in camp, but it is extremely hard to carry when full (40-45 lbs). I'm a reasonably strong man, but the weight is centered too far from my body and the handle only accomodates one hand. I have even used my car to transport the jug from the campground spigot to the camp site and it is still a challenge just to load, unload and carry it the 20 feet on each end.
The flat, rectangular-shaped jugs are a better idea ergonomically, and they pack better in the car as well. An even better way to carry water is to balance the load by carrying a smaller jug in each hand. I think 2 gallons in each hand would be plenty for most people. Even one gallon in each hand is a respectable load. This 5-gallon container works best when filled in place from smaller jugs and I keep a pair on hand for that purpose. It also could be transported on a rolling cart.
The cap is recessed, which makes it possible to stack these. That makes it difficult to pour the last gulp of water out, which complicates drying it out for storage. Cleaning the inside is a puzzle that I haven't solved yet. The plug for the vent stays in place, but it is only friction-fit, so care is advised. You can't see the water level during use, so we tend to run out by surprise.
On the plus side, the cap and spigot work well and clean up easily in the dish washer. The spigot stores on the inside of the lid for transport. The jug is sturdy and convenient once in place. Leaks have not been a problem. It does not tend to tip when stood on end or on it's side for use. That is good because you don't want a 40 pound object tipping over onto a child. It is definitely better to use than the soft collapsible bag-like ones that tumble and lack durability. It is very nice to have a good supply of water in camp with a spigot for washing hands, dishes, cooking and drinking. I have had mine for 18 years and it is still holding up just fine (but used for only about 30 camping days during that time). Good value for the price.
Handy in camp, but hard to carry. I am giving this a hesitant recommendation because although it works fine, I would probably choose a different product next time.
