Comments about REI Base Camp 4 Tent:

Purchased 3 or 4 years ago. Have about 25 nights of use. I find it sturdy, but wouldn't recommend this tent (difficult to set up, and the zipper already seems to be going) or any other tent that doesn't self enclose.

When windy, dust comes through the top of the fly (I would guess rain would also) and seeps in from the bottom of the fly an comes through the mesh. On a recent trip with about 25 mph wind gusts, I could literally feel the dirt land on my face while trying to sleep.

Comments about REI Base Camp 4 Tent:

Took my two young sons to the Huron Nat. Forrest. We hiked in so we split the tent up between our 3 packs. Weather ranged from hot to major storm two days later. We had plenty of room for our gear and were very comfortable. My 11 year old can set it up. Looking into an ASL for late season camping!

Comments about REI Base Camp 4 Tent:

First time we used the Base Camp 4 it leaked. It leaked in three areas; under the seam on the front vestibule, under the seam on the back vestibule, and a third area we never found. During our first use, we faced three days of off and on rain, with steady rain during the nights. It first started leaking in the front vestibule and dripping on our gear stored there - we moved our gear inside. Then it started leaking under the seam on the back vestibule and dripping into the tent's living area through the door screen. Nothing we could do but try to soak it up with towels. The third area happened at night and didn't notice it the until the next morning. It soaked our gear - we never found exactly where the leak came from, just the pools of water under our gear. Very disappointting that a tent at this price point leaks, in it's first use. This overshadows all the good points of this tent.

The good: a roomy two person tent, excellent base camp tent, easy one person setup, sturdy and secure when the tie downs are used. We liked the attic and the attic vents (which could be opened or closed) and the various pockets.

The not so good: the back vestibule is pretty much useless - too small. The front vesitbule is too small too, but you can store a set of packs and boots or two - as long as it doesn't leak. They do get in the way of entry and exit. With the front vestibule zipped up exit and entry are a little difficult or cumbersome, especially if it is raining - you'll get a wet back.

The bad: The pack size listed on the website is not correct, it says 8.5x15. REI even verified, prior to our purchasing) that it really was 8.5x15. It is not, no way, no how, the pole sections are 22-23" alone. It is closer to 8.5x15x24. That's a big difference and important if you have limited space. Using individual compressions sacks for the fly and tent, you can get it down to about 10x24. Hopefully, they have corrected the website.

The worst: it leaks!

Service and delivery comments:

Excellent delivery. The box did look like it was dragged behind the UPS truck all the way, but nothing was damaged and the box was intact.

Comments about REI Base Camp 4 Tent:

This year with the addition of a dog we had to get a bigger family tent. Our first outing with the tent was the Whiteriver National Forest. We got to the camp site just ahead of a rain storm. We had the tent up with out any problems. That week end it rained every evening and one storm with hail. The tent performed as advertised every one stayed warm and dry. There was plenty of room inside for my wife son and the dog plus gear. My wife really appreciated the doors on either side and the little vestabule the rain fly created to keep the wet shoes out of tent but out of the weather.

Comments about REI Base Camp 4 Tent:

I wanted a roomy 3-season tent for 2-4 people for group camping. It's spacious, comfortable, well ventilated, and water tested. However, after just 3 uses, two of the pole sleeves have holes, apparently through abrasions. This tent has not been abused or handled poorly. I will be returning it; not sure if I'd try a second one. (I also don't care for the bent pole design.)

First time using this tent-Wanted to go hiking Mt Elbert. Showed up on Friday--Set up was easy (We know it is heavy, but had never intended to carry it, it is a base camp tent after all. Friday night it rained---A LOT... The Rain fly vent leaked horribly.. Was really disappointed. I plan to take this back. I saw a post that the tent had been redesigned.. Curious to see if their is a new tent. If not--Will be going to a different brand. Will update my comments.

Comments about REI Base Camp 4 Tent:

As a Scoutmaster for an active troop that has at least 11 campouts per year in the Pacific Northwest, it is important to have a durable, 3 season tent that is able to keep me dry and is comfortable enough for my 6'2" frame. The REI Base Camp 4 has been that tent for me. It is just large enough for my cot I like to take on car campouts and if backpacking short distances with a partner, one can carry the gear and one can carry the tent as it comes in a handy backpack bag. It has held up well to heavy rain and high winds and I look forward to using it each month. The only drawback is the small amount of condensation that seems to always build up inside, even with the nifty vents built into the fly.

Comments about REI Base Camp 4 Tent:

I use this tent for car camping. The first time I set it up, it took me about 15 minutes. The fastest I've been able to set it up is under 5 minutes (including rain flap). On average it takes about 6-8 minutes depending on your conditions. (The online video was very helpful!) Ideal for two people, but even with three people there's still plenty of room. I've never done it, but I imagine four people would be cramped. Obviously there are better tents out there, but for the price, this is a really great tent and perfect for most campers.

I would use this tent in nearly any casual camping environment. It's too large and heavy to be carried a great distance, but I've hiked in a couple of miles and it wasn't a hassle. It's very comfortable in warm weather, and is very easy to set up.
