Comments about Electra Townie 8 700C Commuter Bike - 2008:
This is a great bike for commuting, well-equipped with fenders, front and rear lights and rear rack. The internal 8 speed hub shifts beautifully and easily. The peddling position is a bit set back, so that instead of pushing straight down, one is pushing forward a bit, giving the rider better leverage. The gearing is good for hills, though not great. I commute 4 miles each way on my Townie and love it. The longest ride I've made to date is 50 miles, and, though it was a bit slower than other bikes I have, I was comfortable (no back pain!) due to the upright seating.

Comments about Electra Townie 8 700C Commuter Bike - 2008:
I bought this bike thru the REI website without seeing it in person at the store (since they didn't have one is stock). It's a good bike with a couple of issues. First, this is a BIG bike. With the 700c tires you need to be pretty tall to handle it. I'm 6'2 and it fits me perfect. Second, the disk brakes are not what I expected. They take a long time to slow you down and that could be a problem if I ever need to make a quick stop. I took it into the REI bike shop and was told there wasn't much adjustment they could make on disk brakes. Lastly, the bike is not the silver that it appears in the photos. It almost looks crome color in the ads, but in person it's more of a grey color. It's a good commuter bike, with fenders and rear rack, and the seating position is comfortable. The 8 gears are fine for easy commuting as long as you don't have big hills. For the price I expected better, but as long as this is a low maintenance bike I'm happy with it, just not thrilled.
