Comments about Garmin Oregon 300 GPS:

I ended up returning this unit and going back to my 60CSX. The 60CSX is slower because of the buttons, however, it's far more accurate and reliable than the Oregon. What happened Garmin? I expected better out of Garmin for [$]. Hopefully Garmin will live up to their name for their next new line of GPS's. Many of the features offered by Delorme's new unit blows away the Oregon. I would not recommend upgrading to this unit if you have an older Garmin. About the only positive I found besides the touchscreen, is it would be great for a beginner to practice basic GPS usage. Please see my Cons to see the features it lacks.

Comments about Garmin Oregon 300 GPS:

I traded in my 400t simply because this unit allows the user to manipulate and interface with maps. The 400t comes preloaded with TOPO maps that you will have to buy with this unit but those that choose the 300 will be able to use Mapsource software to plan and record trips on your pc.

Comments about Garmin Oregon 300 GPS:

I feel bad for the first user. I used this unit hunting in Washington. It never lost signal, in fact it held several satellites 100% of the time, including in the car surounded by 80-100 ft trees. The menu was intuitive and simple to understand.
My only concern with the unit is that the screen may get worn over time by my fingers touching the screen.

This GPS almost rocks. It is just that darn screen in certain lighting where it just tanks. Every thing else is great.

Comments about Garmin Oregon 300 GPS:

I'm a long time user of the Garmin GPS. I recently decided to upgrade from the etrex Vista CX to the Oregon 300. After having the Oregon for less than a week I've decided to take it back to REI for a refund. Here are my observations on the Oregon series:
          - The backlight is inferior to the etrex Vista CX. Maps and tracks are extremely hard to discern in full sunlight. This is a show stopper for me.
          - The Oregon has less functionality when compared to the etrex Vista CX
o Tracks cannot be renamed without using the MapSource software.
o The customizable Welcome message was removed. This was good place to put your name and contact info in case you ever lost your GPS.
o The waypoint proximity feature was removed.
o The jumpmaster feature was removed. Probably one of the least used features but it wasn't hurting anything.
o With the etrex you could connect to MapSource via USB and still edit data on the GPS and transfer data. You can't edit data on the Oregon while connected to MapSource.

These are just a few of the things I've noticed. Overall, I'd say that Garmin dumbed down the Oregon series to make it more user friendly to the average consumer but they short changed the power user in the process. On a positive note, Garmin customer and technical support is without peer.

Comments about Garmin Oregon 300 GPS:

I just got back from SW Colorado, and brought this GPS along with me for a test run.The thing lost all satelite singals just 6 miles into a 39 mile trek, and never recovered. I could even get a cell phone signal from time to time, and 6 satelites on my cell phone GPS, but this Garmin product was completely worthless. After the first six miles, I never got a signal again (not even when I got back to Denver and Chicago) and no, I didnt drop it or beat it up. By far the biggest waste of [$] I have ever spent. Its back to a topo map and compass for me.

Comments about Garmin Oregon 300 GPS:

Very nice esp. coming from a E-Trex Vista this is a superb little unit. If you thing is Geocaching it works great. I use mine for tracking while ATVing and it is perfect for that as well. I like to think of the Oregon as the do all machine. One thing to think about if you trying to decide between the 300 or the 400t go with the 300 as you can buy the same mapping software as the 400t (only diff between the 2) and plot your own courses the download it to the GPS. One other thing that is cool that you don't read about much is the field notes that you can put into the Oregon while Geocaching then upload them to the website!
