Comments about REI On Air Adjustable Pillow:

Comments about REI On Air Adjustable Pillow:
I'll start by addressing the most common concern, air Leaks: Most folks usually inflate it after they're in the air. There's less air pressure up high, obviously, so when starting initial descent and especially by the time you land, it will seem to have deflated a bit due to an increase in air pressure. Blame the laws of physics, not REI! I'm sure that there are some faulty products out there, naturally. But, in all the years I've had this product and during the 30-40 flights I've used it on (most of which were international, which I count as one flight), I've never really had any problems with deflating other than the air pressure change (mentioned above), and a very slight loss of air after flying for 22+ hours. No problem though, just give it a very small puff of air, which only takes a few seconds, and you're good to go. A;so, it's not like it goes flat - after long time (certainly more than you'd be sleeping) you might notice a slight drop in firmness - again, just a quick puff of air if that's the case.
I've used foam, bead, and "tempur-pedic" doughnut pillows in the past, and while they may feel comfy, they don't offer nearly the support that the REI inflatable does. Your head usually flops to one side which defeats the purpose. Since you fill it to your liking, the REI pillow can be so firm it keeps your head and neck erect and aligned, which is nice, or you can tap the air button a bit until you get just the right softness (which you can do while wearing, fortunately). I also like to lower the food tray and use it similar to a massage table head pillow. Add the little airplane pillow and maybe even the blanket to that pile and you've got another pretty comfortable way to sleep.
It's compact, which I love! Maybe I'm just being silly, but it always looks a bit tacky or novice to have a big foam pillow strapped to the outside of your carry-on. This one folds up nicely and flat in the provided carry sac and only takes up about as much space as two wallets (typical male size), Great for traveling light.
Anyways, it's a fantastic pillow and I highly recommend it! If you are unfortunate and have a very slight leak over the course of many hours (which you probably won't), weigh your options - is comfort and customizability at the cost of a puff of air every 20 hours (which only takes a few seconds) better than a pillow that lets your head flop around for the entire 20 hours? And if your experience is south of 3 stars, just return it.

So dissappointed... All set to take on a long trip and survived a 5 minute crash test... 30 minutes into flight on first use, pillow flat. Tried many things... Nothing worked. Will be returning. Typically, love and often purchase rei brand. This doesnt cut it.

Comments about REI On Air Adjustable Pillow:
This was purchased to replace a still-functional Eagle Creek pillow that uses the same On Air valve. It's made one trip to Paris (four different flights) and will be making a West Coast Trip (also four flights).
The advantages to the REI pillow are:
-- Washable, non-fleece cover. The fleece covers pick up a lot of lint and other stuff. This is some kind of knit fabric, but seems to stay cleaner.
-- Pouch. This pillow stores in a pouch, rather than folding into itself like the Eagle Creek. That helps it stay cleaner.
-- Not as deep at the neck. As noted in another review, this pillow is a little flatter on the back. That allows the back of your head to contact the seat back rather than being entirely supported by the pillow -- thus a more natural position. It also trims the bulk of the pillow a little, both inflated and in the pouch.
I note some QC issues with this pillow in other reviews. Problems with the valve are puzzling, because that the same valve as the Eagle Creek pillow and I've used that for years with no problem.

Comments about REI On Air Adjustable Pillow:
I held off purchasing a travel neck pillow for some time. I fly several times a month and did not want to carry a bulky pillow on business trips. However I purchased this pillow for a recent trip to S. Korea and I've used it on every flight since. It is incredibly compact and inflates within three breaths. The little pouch is perfect and I can easily stash it in my purse when boarding. I love the fact that you can wash the soft cotton cover and that the fact that there is a flat area that rests against the seat back. This allows for a more natural and comfortable head position when sleeping.
I purchased this item in August 2011 and have used it 12 times in the last four months, I found it to function as described in the instructions. No issue with quality what-so-ever. Perhaps REI has adjusted it's quality control due to past reviews.
I highly recommend this neck pillow and I'm considering purchasing another as a Christmas gift!

Bought the pillow for air travel. It worked well for several trips, but after a couple years of infrequent use, the unit developed a slow leak

The valve broke the first time I tried to inflate it. This was on an 11-hour overnight flight to Brazil, so no pillow on that flight or the flight home. :-(

Comments about REI On Air Adjustable Pillow:
This travel pillow looked to be a good design at a very fair price.
However: when I got the travel pillow home, I found that the supposedly high-quality "ON Air Comfort" valve did not work at all. The valve was missing the inner flap necessary to seal air pressure in the pillow. So, the pillow cannot be be filled with air to capacity and it cannot be adjusted for air pressure. Very disappointed in REI's quality control on this item.

Comments about REI On Air Adjustable Pillow:
First, product came with no information. Zilch
Second, Tried the pillow out the night I got it. I had to reinflate three times during the night and it was almost completely flat in the morning.
Returning REI pillow and will search for another brand.
Disappointed.
