After its initial break-in period you might notice your bicycle performing less responsively than the day you brought it home. Not to worry, this is typical of all new bicycles and simply reflects that cables have stretched or their housings have seated themselves into final position. To keep running at peak performance, all REI bicycles come with a FREE warranty tune-up, which should be accomplished between the first 100-200 miles of riding or after the first two months if you're accumulating miles less quickly. Contact your nearest REI bike shop for details and an appointment for this important service.

Comments about Novara Mia Women's Bike - 2009:

I got this bike for my wife after many years of not biking. Her main complaint about the mountain bike was that the center frame rail prevented you from stepping through to mount/dismount. The relaxed curved frame of this bike solves that problem.

The bike itself is loaded with features and has just about everything you could want.

      Relaxed Step through frame
      Shock absorbing seat mount post
      Front shocks
      21 speed gearing
      Mid width but tall tires
      Attractive color
      Comfortable seat

She enjoys the relaxed upright ride. The gearing seems more than adequate for around town use. We hooked it up with a Topeak Child seat and front basket. Due to the design of the bike getting the Child seat hooked up was quite a challenge. The problem is the mounting lugs on the rear of the frame are practically level with the rear caliper brakes. This makes anything you attach to them difficult as you have to go over the brakes. This is going to be an issue with any back mounted cargo rack you might buy.

For those looking to mount a front mounted child seat pay attention. There isn’t enough space on the front cylinder (where the steering passes through) to attach a mount. There is no center bar took hook it to either. If you raise the handlebars up enough you might be able to get something there but then the kid turns when you do.

As far as the basket went, the Topeak fit the handle bars but the mount wasn’t up to the job. We got a Wald 3313 QR basket and that seems to work pretty well. No problems with the handlebars. Walk makes some other more substantial baskets that attach to the front fork but you can’t use those because of the front shocks.

The front shocks seem to work well enough. They dampen but not eliminate the shock of impact. About what you would expect for this class of shock/bike. The shock absorbing post in the seat is about the same. It helps to take the sting out but you still feel it.

The bike seems to have attention to detail with small touches like vinyl slips over the cables where they would rub the frame. Cush handlegrips and a nice, efficient bell. The tires are general purpose street tires that handle water ok. Rocks or heavy mud is not what their meant for.

If your looking for a relaxed ride that can handle just about anything you’d find on the street this is a good choice.

Comments about Novara Mia Women's Bike - 2009:

Have been riding this bike everyday to school since purchasing it about two weeks ago. I absolutely love it. Haven't been on a bike since I was a kid so I was nervous but this bike handles very well. I feel safe and in control. The color and style are perfect for me. Looks like a cruiser but gets me up the two hills on my morning commute.

Comments about Novara Mia Women's Bike - 2009:

Pros: Wife loves the bike and looks for excuses to take it everywhere, ~ 2000mi/yr. It's very comfortable and gives a great ride. Looks great, too.

          Cons:
          1. A rear drive spoke broke at 600mi. Another at 800mi. (Rider is light, not exceptionally strong, and rides on smooth roads). Suspecting a bad batch of spokes, REI kindly replaced the wheel - fine service. The wheel has only 32 spokes which may be low for an upright riding position (more weight to rear). If the trend continues we'll move to a 40 spokes wheel.

          2. The rear lugs are curved toward the seat stays in a way that interferes with luggage rack mounting - they could be filed flat (warranty) or one could use washers (more load on the screws), so we fabricated an adapter plate to extend the mounting holes.

          3. Distorted frame. The two "down tubes" are not aligned one over the other, with one being bowed laterally - a minor annoyance. The wheels track straight, which is the important thing.

          4. Water bottle mountings on frame would be nice.

This bike is perfect for commuting to work (downhill) and back (uphill). With the addition of a rack and a trunk bag it is also perfect for shopping errands. It is a great bike for the price and I couldn't be happier with it.

Comments about Novara Mia Women's Bike - 2009:

Loved the bike but forget the tune up! Two days after purchase, this bike slipped gears while I was peddling hard across 6 lanes of Apache Trail.
I took it back for the tune up and after picking it up found the rear brake adjuster was hanging out all the way and had been obviously cross threaded resulting in mushy brakes. Finally took it to a real bike shop, since I couldn't get the rear v-brakes off the wheel. Rides fine now but I actually don't trust it, so I'll buy a real bike from a real bike shop. Have told my husband that he's in serious trouble if he ever buys any of REI's high priced cutsie gear again.
