I used this jacket for a trip to CO for some ice climbing. We camped out in the snow and temps ranged between 10 - 25 deg F while we were there. This jacket kept me warm the whole time. Even walking around in the dead of night I never felt slightly cold.
The inner layer of this jacket is removable and made out of a synthetic that insulates beautifully. The shell also has some minor insulation and I plan to use it on my snowboard trips when I dont need so much heat.
As far as the ice climbing, in a perfect world I would have preferred the jacket be slightly less bulky, but really this is a very minor complaint. I felt I had plenty of mobility to swing my tools around and the jacket went under my harness just fine. It also stood up to two whole days of climbing and still looked great.
I wore the jacket with only an REI heavyweight base layer underneath. I did feel a bit warm at times of exertion, but I never used the vents (both the inner and outer jacket have pit vents btw so you can get cooling down to your base). Im sure if I did use them I would have felt fine.

Overall Im very glad I got this jacket. It is a bit pricey, but it is very versatile and and functions in many situations because the inner and outer layers can be worn separately.

Do not buy this coat if you plan on using it for activities requiring any level of exertion. The inner liner does not breathe at all, leaving you totally soaked during even mild exertion. I bought this coat expecting the same high quality I had experienced with other Marmot garments. My very first use of the coat was to run the snowblower to clear my driveway in sub-zero weather.....no strenuous shoveling...just running the snowblower. When I returned to the house and took off the coat I found that my upper body was soaked to the skin, with sweat literally running down the inner liner, particularly in the sleeves. Subsequent uses have produced the same results, each time requiring that I turn the coat inside-out to dry after use. Totally unacceptable and potentially life-threatening in back-country situations.

This jacket surpassed my expectations. It really is a very flexible clothing system but for me it is Marmot's build quality that impresses.

Perfect for camping and hiking or simply just being outdoors when protection from the cold and/or wet is needed.

I received this jacket as a gift prior to spending a week in Vancouver/Whistler last January. I couldn't be any happier with the product. It has held up well in the rain/snow during that week in Canada, and due to the detachable liner, it's been great here in California for the rest of the time. I would highly recommend this coat for others who are using it for the same purposes. I only wish I had more of an opportunity to see how it performed in more athletic conditions.
