Comments about Ruffwear Ruff Wear Palisades Dog Pack:
my dog fell in a fast flowing creek, and the handle was so easy to grab, i just snatched her out of the water before the current could wash her away. also, the bags float to some extent. the water bladders are a great feature, i can' carry enough for both on long hikes. ok, i can carry the water, but she also needs to carry her own stuff.

Comments about Ruffwear Ruff Wear Palisades Dog Pack:
We love this pack. The harness is really sturdy, and I like being able to put on the harness without the saddlebags so my dog can have more ease of movement when we're climbing and sit more comfortably in the car without taking everything off.

Comments about Ruffwear Ruff Wear Palisades Dog Pack:
I borrowed this pack from a friend to use for a few months with my Aussie. It works ok but NOT any better than the other packs my dog has used. For their price, ALL Ruff Wear products should be made with better stitching and seams and better materials like Gore-Tex and leather at seams and joints. I want a bullet proof pack for this price. Large, fast moving dogs are hard on stuff. After I read an article on the owner stating he moved Ruff Ware production to Vietnam from China to save huge money, I'm asking myself for whom? He is ONLY raising prices NOT passing on ANY of these savings to the customers or using way better materials. I will not buy this product since it is not worth the increasing extra cost. And does not hold up any better than the other packs. It may look nicer, but my dog does not really care! I'm glad I tested it before I make a purchase.

Comments about Ruffwear Ruff Wear Palisades Dog Pack:
Works great! It took several adjustments to get it set up right and the fact that our dog is still growing doesn't help that!
The pack easily holds his food, water, long (in-camp) leash, a toy, etc. We carry his sleeping pad and regular leash.
When he sees the pack come out he knows we're going on an adventure and is excited to put it on. He acts like he doesn't know it's on him and he is more than capable of 10+ mile days.
The only issue we have is the little velcro tabs that are supposed to hold the pack to the harness to minimize bouncing... the tabs aren't big enough to stay connected especially after getting wet.
Our dog is currently ~12 months old and weighs 75 pounds.

Comments about Ruffwear Ruff Wear Palisades Dog Pack:
This pack is great for your dog. I have used it several times and it holds up well to the abuse a dog will put it through. Water bladders, keep me from having to use my water for the dog. Also, the fact that the pack is removable while the harness stays attached is awesome. Comes in handy when stopping for breaks, and makes the water easy to pour for the dog. It adjusts easily, and fits snug due to the multiple adjustment straps. If you like to take your dog on backpacking trips this is a must, and in my opinion it is the only one worth getting. They go the extra mile to make sure your dog will enjoy the comfort of this pack

Comments about Ruffwear Ruff Wear Palisades Dog Pack:
I purchased this for my chow hound to carry her own weight. I have an older pack, made circa 1980 but so many improvements have been done on dog packs over the years, wanted to upgrade, espcially after packing my dog's food and stuff on the last backpack trip with her.
There seems to be a multiple number of ways to adjust the straps to get a good fit and although I have the initial pack adjusted, I am sure that I will be fine-tuning it up the road. It is a great improvement over my prior pack. I will report back after some use.

Comments about Ruffwear Ruff Wear Palisades Dog Pack:
These are great dog packs. They were recommended by a friend and at first I balked at the price but they are worth every penny. We use them for both our Ridgeback and our Lab Mix so they can carry their own water/things when we hike. So far we have used them only on day hikes and weekend camping trips, but intend on using them for a longer backpacking trip this fall. It seems there will be plenty of room for the additional food/items needed in the packs.
The Good:
-Easy to pack and put on. Love the straps to chinch down load if they are only carrying water/few items.
-Seems to be very comfortable for the dogs. Once they adjusted to wearing the packs (work up slowly!) they don't even seem to notice them.
-Durable and stable; packs stayed put and appeared no worse for the wear even when dogs chased a squirrel through thickets.
-Love the seperate harness and pack. Very easy to remove the pack without taking off the whole get-up for lunch breaks or longer water/rest stops.
-My husband loves the sturdy harness with a handle for lifting the dogs over things when needed.
The Bad:
-They are more expensive than most other packs on the market (just because its worth it, doesn't mean I LIKE the price and waited for sales to buy)
-Sizing by Ruff Wear is hard to fit when buying online/without your dog to try them on. This is worse for other Ruff Wear products like coats, than for the packs since packs are very adjustable but I still found it difficult to determine correct size based on girth measurement provided. While both being 75lbs the lab mix and Ridgeback are built differently. In the end, with different adjustments, the Medium fits them both (If you asked me, I would tell you I had large dogs)

Comments about Ruffwear Ruff Wear Palisades Dog Pack:
This pack is very durable. Out here in the southwest there are plenty of opportunities for packs to get rubbed against burly shrubs, sharp cactus and razor sharp rocks. I have been extremely pleased that this pack has held up extremely well. I do like the placement of the water packs because they double as padding and keeps my boxer cool in the heat. The removable saddlebag is equivalent to having AC in your car. It's simply a must have. I couldn't imagine purchasing a pack without that convenience. The compression points on the pack are amazing and really do the job. I gave the pack 4 stars because obviously it isn't perfect. The water bladders have holes in the top as if to hang them on hooks within the pack... but there are no hooks for them to hang. This overall has not hindered getting water from the bladder to the bowl through the secret zipper on the inside of the saddle. I do find myself tightening and adjusting the pack at least once every hike as the straps tend to "slip" after lots of rock jumping and climbing. I wish the clips used left enough room to do a double back. I do like that I have the option of having my boxer Chunk carry just his water and bivy bowl or a full load depending on the hike. Great pack Ruff Wear!!!!!!

Comments about Ruffwear Ruff Wear Palisades Dog Pack:
I've been very pleased with Ruff Wear, and this is no exception! Part of the reason I bought it was because it could server as a pack and a harness separately, and it has done an excellent job at both. It was also very easy to get my dog used to it gradually by putting just the harness on at first and let him wear it around the house, then taking him for walks in it, then attaching the packs. My dog absolutely loves getting wet, so when I let him he'll dash straight to the river or lake and practically dive right in. It's great to be able to remove the pack beforehand, or if I don't there are small drainage holes in the bottom of the packs to let it drain out. As far as sizing, I was surprised that my 70lb dog would wear a medium, but I did contact Ruff Wear directly from their website and they were great offering help and gave me a very clear answer of what size to get.
Service and delivery comments:
REI's customer support is always great; I mentioned it earlier, but I contacted Ruff Wear directly for help with sizing and they responded promptly, offering clear and useful answers.

Comments about Ruffwear Ruff Wear Palisades Dog Pack:
This pack is amazing! I use it everyday. I use just the vest at night when we walk around the neighborhood because it is very reflective. I use just the vest when rollerblading because it is great for pulling. The backpack is even better, It has large pockets, compression straps, 2 hydration bladders. I have had the pack for a year and taken it on many hikes. O yea.. It still looks new.
