I've used Smartwool products for a number of years for hiking and backpacking, and have always appreciated the superior construction, durability, wicking and (certainly) comfort. I hadn't done much alpine skiing recently, so did not know about the "PhD Ski" line of products. Outstanding socks from every perspective.

I need thin socks for my ski boots, and saw the Ultra Lights in a ski shop during a week of skiing over the holidays. I bought them, changed into them on the spot, and now will never wear anything else for skiing. My feet stayed warm and dry all day, every day (except for a day of 3 degrees with 50-mph winds, but the skiing was short-lived…though they were great at the bar as well =). Aside from skiing, I wear them as dress black socks for work on cold winter days, and they're also great for traveling, especially on long flights.

I have a couple of pair of the PhD Lights as well – a bit thicker and warmer – and love those, too.

In cold conditions, having my feet warm and comfortable makes all the difference. The PhD's have consistently risen to all challenges.
