Comments about REI Urban Traveler Pack:
I have used this pack twice for long weekend trips, and it has proven well worth the purchase. I can get 4-5 shirts, a couple pairs of pants/shorts (summerweight), and an Eagle Creek halfcube for undies and socks, with room to spare. While I typically travel without a toiletry kit, the wedge-shaped expansion provides more than enough room for one, or more clothes.
An internal panel buckles down to compress clothes, and minimize wrinkles (I fold my clothes around the panel from an Eagle Creek 18" packing folder, stack them, and fit the stack in the bag). Watch not to cinch it too tight, or the padded back will bow somewhat.
The front compartment is pretty well organized, though I wish it had a little more depth to it, to allow for items too big for any of the internal pockets (i.e. trade-size paperbacks), and I suppose the key fob could be more useful if it were longer (like the Timbuk2 bags).
The front pocket is a little too tight, but this may related to me cramming the compartment behind it to the brim.
As an added bonus, it's made primarily from recycled polyester. So if you care about supporting such efforts, it's a small way to reduce your consumption (well, they're all small, but they add up). Plus, if you really just don't like it, REI's 100% satisfaction guarantee would allow you to return it.
Happy Travels!

Comments about REI Urban Traveler Pack:
As a college student, I got this backpack to replace a worn-out laptop backpack. Fortunately for me, I do not carry my laptop around except for the occasional class presentation, so lack of a laptop compartment was fine (if you do carry laptops around, look into REI's Quantum Computer Pack). I did, however, find it difficult to carry books and papers around in, because when the large flap is unzipped it will just let everything spill out. (One adaption is to clip the top of the internal pockets to the bottom clips, creating a pocket for books and folders, although binders may not fit.)
However, as a traveler and an athlete, this pack has come in handy for storing clothes and other bulky items. The compression panels keep the volume down, and expansion zipper is extremely handy for when I just brought too much stuff along.
Also have received a few compliments about the bag!

Comments about REI Urban Traveler Pack:
I bought this backpack in my quest to find a suitable bag for work. Which is essentially an over night bag, some documents, misc work goodies, a leisure book or two; and some personal quirk stuff like a map, first aid kit, poncho and other '10 essential' like goodies.
I was at first intrigued by the compression system in the main compartment. I think this is a great idea for keeping your change of clothes from sinking into a lump in the bottom of your bag. I was, however, confused about the two zippered compartments that are located on the compression system's panel. The length and height dimensions were a little odd but not unusable, it was the lack of depth that confounded me. These were essentially document depth pockets, which made them questionably useful to me. I have no idea why they added a mesh pocket on the back of the main compartment; its difficult to access and anything you place in there is going to get compressed into the back stay (which means its better not be bulky oddly shaped or small).
The feature that I found to be most frustrating was the semi-rigid paneling surrounding the main compartment. It forces the bag to be near full volume even if its completely empty. In an urban environment (buses, trolleys, trains, crowded sidewalks, elevators) this is pretty much a liability. Granted the backpack does have a handle and I can carry it in these circumstances. But thats not why I bought a backpack.
The Organizer pocket is pretty well designed, but like another user mentioned it should have more depth to comfortably accommodate trade paperback novel size items. The side slash pocket is a good size for wallet/passport, but should probably be heightened to accommodate a street map, plane ticket, itinerary height documents.
Lastly, the bag starts out pretty heavy so watch what you put in it. And if you are broad shouldered this backpack will probably never fit right.

Comments about REI Urban Traveler Pack:
Purchased for international travel as my primary carry on. Also used while on safari. Love the padded straps and handle. The expandable zipper was nice too when I needed to stuff my jacket in the pack. Lots of pockets and places to put things, including a water bottle on the side. Only downside is the weight. At 2 lbs 6oz it is a bit heavy. This was almost 10% of the 26 lbs I was allowed for luggage while on safari. But it was worth it. Looking forward to travelling again with this when I don't have such restrictions on luggage weight.

Comments about REI Urban Traveler Pack:
Most commuting backpacks are built to accommodate bulkly laptops and leave little room for anything else. In the days of smartphones, netbooks, and tablets, I no longer need or want to carry a big laptop around. This backpack is big enough to carry a small or medium-sized laptop in a separate sleeve, but it's also flexible enough to fit so many other things in its expandable main compartment. I use it to carry a portfolio, books, and sometimes even lunch in an insulated container.
In the front and on the sides, there are dedicated pockets I use for earbuds, eyeglasses, a water bottle, my transit pass, and other daily necessities. There's room for just about anything I might need when traveling around town during a busy day, and when I expand the bag, it can serve as luggage for a one-or-two-night trip.
The bag is made predominantly from recycled materials without any sacrifice in durability or style. In fact, this bag is so far holding up better than my previous Victorinox laptop bag. My only criticism is that the color choices are dull. Right now, I see only black, the color I bought, listed, but I think there might have been a drab earth tone available at some point. My hope is that if this bag attains the popularity it deserves then REI will consider bolder color choices.

Comments about REI Urban Traveler Pack:
I love this bag & I'd be lost without it. I pretty much live out of it. It will be pretty much irreplaceable if it ever wears out, but it shows no sign of doing so. I'd get the exact same thing again. Eagle Creek cube & netbook fit behind the compressor flap, and a double half cube fits on the bottom. Good organization & accessibility except for the back area if the rest is full. The fully opening zipper is very helpful for packing & unpacking clothes. Can't say enough good about this bag.

Comments about REI Urban Traveler Pack:
I am so excited about this backpack and I can't even believe that I finally found one to fit all my books and most of my personal items that normally would be in a purse. It fits my hard cover law book, soft cover law book (thick, two binders, a wallet and so many other items. I like the compartments too. Thank you for making this. It's perfect for college students.

Comments about REI Urban Traveler Pack:
I was looking for a small backpack to replace my old Eagle Creek backpack that I use to carry camera gear. For versatility, I did not want a regular camera backpack. This backpack is perfect. I was able to put a camera, plus 4 lenses and accessories into the bag without any issue. And there's still room for a jacket, some munchies or a book on the plane.
The bag is comfortable to carry using either the backpack straps or the handbag-type strap. The backpack's frame and structure is strong enough to protect my camera gear from damage. I can see using it for a weekend trip or on my next photo safari. It's a great bag and I would highly recommend it to anyone who asked.
