by oohlarockfromOki travel quite a bit to random spots on the earth where a roller bag would never cut it. I purchased this bag to replace one I had been using for years simply for the easy access front zipper. Plus, I thought the bigger size and detachable day pack would be a big bonus. In reality, this bag was just too enormous, and I'm back on REI looking for a smaller bag to take on my next trip. Even if you don't fill the bag to capacity, there's not much of an option to cinch it down. It's pretty heavy and awkward, and I did not want to carry it on my back for a step more than I had to. Also, figuring out the zippers is a bit complicated at first - I thought I had broken off the detachable backpack.
In all, it's a well-made, solid bag, but I just wouldn't want to take it with me anywhere!

by niniofromawesome, REI finally made this bag!i love to hike and travel and was always worried when checking in my previous hiking backpack for fear the straps would be ripped off. this pack's strap cover is great for that, and for easier storage (when i'm traveling i use it as an extra place to pack small/flat things if i've run out of space in the main pack). the multi-entry pockets make for easy access and more organized packing.
the small bag on the back is great when you get to where you want to be, and want to run around but don't want to pack an extra bag.
the only drawback was that the padded side strap isn't exactly centered so it's a bit off balance when i was carrying it on it's side. but with that said, a month or so later when i was carrying it the same way, i didn't have this problem - so it could have been how i packed it.
overall it fits great, comfortable, great to travel with, and is a unique color so easy to find in the airport.

by joyfulfortressfromGreat All Around BagI have a previous generation of this bag that I use all the time. I have some issues with the version I own, but I'm happy to see that REI made the improvements I would have recommended (such as a cinch strap attached to the little backpack and the side mesh pocket is upright instead of sideways).
I've taken many multi-week trips with this bag and it has more than enough space for my needs and it's really easy to carry around on my back without being obstructive. Because the straps zip in I never worry about them getting dirty or ripping off while they are transitting through airports.
My coworkers and friends abroad love my bag so much they want me to purchase a few for them on my next trip to the states. I really recommend this to anyone who wants a moderately sized but versatile bag.

by sarsamfromDaypack too small for laptop computer. This pack was terrific for my week long trek to the Grand Tetons... the only drawback was that I was going for work and needed to carry my laptop onto the plane (can't check it in the bigger bag). The daypack isn't big enough for a laptop computer, so I ended up having to carry another daypack in addition to this pack+daypack, which got cumbersome and totally defeated the purpose of the bag... IF ONLY the day pack were a bit bigger, I would have only needed this one bag and it would have been perfect.

by europe in 2 monthsfromDecent for traveling/shorter tripsI used this backpack traveling Europe and it worked well. It was small but I didn't bring much. Not any straps on the outside really so no good place to hook water bottle or anything else. Day bag was WONDERFUL! very useful and nice to have though by week 2 I never zipped it on the front again. When the day bag is full and the bag is full it is a very wide bag and therefore easier to travel without it attached.
The disadvantage to this bag is the fact the the strapping system is not comfortable or very well designed. The hip buckle is not padded and does not seem to hold the weight of the bag where it should be placed.
I would recommend this bag to someone who is looking to use it for trips where the bag will not be on your back frequently or for long periods of time. Wonderful for plane travel for it can be used as a carry-on.

by eccfromgreat travel pack!I recently returned from a 3 week backpacking trip to china and japan. I got the backpack as a christmas gift and was worried at home because the fit didnt seem as comfortable as my boyfriends osprey pack. But I loved the color, and the different compartments were appealing for organization so I kept it.
The pack held up great! It was a good amount of space for the 3 weeks. The day pack is fantastic! it is super easy to zip on and off (took just a couple of seconds even when both were fully packed with stuff) which i did frequently as we moved through trains, hotels etc. I used the day pack every day, then attached it to the back pack for traveling on trains/buses etc. It had a good capacity for my day stuff and water bottle (i carried a scarf, rain coat, camera, journal, travel book, sunglasses, hat easily). I did not use the hydration system but am looking forward to adding one for the next trip. As for the main back pack, the main compartment was super easy to access and large. The top pocket was really handy for items I needed easy to reach. I carried the bag on the plane for the flight to china (no problem as carryon), zipped up the waist and arm straps and checked it in as a duffle for the flight home, it held up great throughout (and was easy to identify amongst all of the black bags!).
The biggest cons are that the suspension system isnt the easiest to adjust for my petite waist (i am 5'3'')and the handles look like they arent the best quality. Having said that nothing ripped or tore, and it wasnt that difficult to carry it as a duffle with the side handle. In addition, the initial discomfort was not an issue for the 3 weeks even when the bag was loaded up with my stuff. The main compartment zipper did stick a bit, but it wasnt that major of an issue either. And i dont think the bag's compression system is the best quality out there.
Overall, for the price I think this is a fantastic bag and loved having it with my through my 22 days in china and japan! I can't wait to use it next year for africa!
