Comments about Gerber Sliding Saw:
I bought this saw as a general purpose saw for camping, and because it was light enough to bring backpacking. This design is nice, but the bolt that locks the saw blade (open or closed) is weak and poorly designed. Tighten it just a little too loose and it slides back in. I used it for ONE trip and after a couple of days of use the bolt could no longer keep the blade locked out - rendering the saw USELESS. It is too bad because I like the saw otherwise, the blade design makes it very efficient and it is comfortable and light.
The One-Star rating is harsh, I know. But when poor design is so bad that it renders the tool useless, it is hard to justify more than that.
Bottom Line - I WOULD NOT recommend this, ESPECIALLY for survival purposes. Buy either a folding saw or the Sven Saw.

Comments about Gerber Sliding Saw:
I used this saw for over a year while camping and hiking and where it finally shows its' design flaw is the screw that locks it into the open or closed position: It finally wears out and is ineffective in keeping the blade in the open position. Otherwise it would have been okay. I would not depend on it for survival use.

Comments about Gerber Sliding Saw:
I put this saw in my cargo pocket and never go hiking with out it! Small and I like that the blade slides inside the handle and locks in both retracted and open positions. Combined with the Pack axe combo, and your cutting needs are met. Makes short work of wrist sized logs to manageable size, and even to make stakes, points on walking sticks,or tarp/tent poles

Comments about Gerber Sliding Saw:
The saw blade bent, then snapped in half while sawing a branch that should have been of no consequence. I emailed Gerber, and they refused to assist or address the issue. I certainly will not be purchasing any of their products from this point.

Comments about Gerber Sliding Saw:
This is a nice little saw; this thing just chews through 4" to 6" logs like nothing. Be careful, you get a little to aggressive you could bend the blade like I did. You can bend it back though if it's just a little bend. I recently used this saw on an exercise were I had to clear fallen trees from in front of a backroad climb with the sheriff's rig. This thing made quick and short work of it. Be careful of the competitors I have found that they do not cut as quickly but are thicker in the blade.

Comments about Gerber Sliding Saw:
I do a lot of hiking and trailriding, and this saw is always with me. It mostly gets used for clearing trees on trails, but works well for cutting firewood. The blade is thin, and it will break, if you are not careful. The teeth are razor sharp, and it cuts small logs quickly.
