Comments about Gerber Rivermate Serrated Knife:
This knife will not stay in the sheath when the sheath is mounted so the knife handle is down on a PFD tab.
At least if you are oaring. The forward motion of the body causes the grippy rubber of the handle to contact the material of the PFD and when the body moves backward the knife handle gets tugged on causing it to be pulled out of the sheath.
This can also happen on shore if you bend over to pick up something or just from normal body movements. I had the knife fall out 4 times on a trip down the Wenatchee. Once at the put-in and 3 times on the river. The last time I couldn't catch the knife.
This seems to be a bad design. The knife releases too easily from the sheath.

Comments about Gerber Rivermate Serrated Knife:
I had the same issue as the previous reviewer until I realized that I hadn't fully sheathed the knife. It actually locks into the place. Unfortunately, the lock clicks in so hard that it cannot be unsheathed with one hand without pulling the sheath off of whatever it is attached to. This knife is poorly designed and I am shooping for a new one while I return this to REI.

Comments about Gerber Rivermate Serrated Knife:
This is a good knife for boating and camping. The blade is razor sharp, and very sturdy. I have had it now for about two months and have had no problems.

Comments about Gerber Rivermate Serrated Knife:
The knife is difficult to sheath, but I think for it's intended use, it's ideal. This knife needs to stay secure in rough conditions, yet be accessible. All serrated blade for quick, no kidding around, cuts when needed.

Comments about Gerber Rivermate Serrated Knife:
I am a white-water rafting/hunting guide in northern california and while on a solo trip scouting a new section of frshly flooded river, I was capsized and became entangled under my canoe. Thanks to the easy access sheath I was able to cut myself free underwater and escape.

Comments about Gerber Rivermate Serrated Knife:
The knife is sharp and the serrated blade cuts through rope like butter, and the tip is blunted to avoid puncturing your raft...but that doesn't matter if it won't release from the sheath. I tried several different ways of securing the sheath to my belt but it just didn't matter, the sheath always realeased from my belt before the knife released from the sheath...and in an emergency i.e. upside down in the water and tangled by line you just don't have time to mess around with this useless sheath. Until they fix the sheath I do not reccomend this knife for anything other then casual use.
