Comments about SteriPEN Journey Water Purifier:
It was recommended to buy this for a trip to India for my water use. I opened the box the night before leaving to put in my suitcase. I found the package to have plastic to be opened already and no instructions to be in the box. So after looking for the instructions online, I thought I had resolved the no instructions issue. However, I used the pen over an over and over again with no success. It turned on and worked only twice the entire trip. So here I am in a India traveling through shanty towns, for the work project I was on, always concerned about what I am drinking and if I will be getting sick. So frustrating and returning back to the store asap.

I bought this without reading the reviews. I was at REI, saw it and thought I would give it a try, it wasn't until I got home and read the reviews that I wondered what I had done. I was going out on the PCT for a short 4 day hike and thought I would give it a try and knew that if I didn't like it REI would take it back without issue. It worked fine in my house in a nice 72 degree setting, and then the first time I had to use it on the trail, it was about 70 degrees, (the original batteries still in it)it worked without issues, then it happened, the temperature dropped at night and the batteries got cold and it just wouldn't work. I tried over and over and it just wouldn't work. Now I did learn something from the reviews, so I bought some extra batteries and kept them warm, I put them in and the thing worked just fine. I warmed up the batteries I took out, put them back in and they worked just fine then too. However I feel I shouldn't have to worry so much about keeping batteries warm while I'm backpacking. This thing is just too much work. I'm kind of surprised that REI has continued to carry a product that continues to get such poor reviews from their customers, you would think they would remove it from their shelves if it doesn't work the way it's supposed to. So if you don't mind messing around with the batteries then go for it. This thing works just fine with warm batteries, but if you don't want to mess around with the batteries then pass on it.

This worked well in Boundary Waters using very clear water to begin with and a Nalgene bottle for each fill up and filtration.

Comments about SteriPEN Journey Water Purifier:
"filtered water" still seemed risky in India. We used this each time we did not have access to a securely sealed bottle of water. Water tasted fresh and we all stayed well hydrated with no ill effects throughout the India trip . Great product. light weight , very easy to use.One member of our group left this with the World Association of Girl Scouts and Girl Guides for their use. They were thrilled to have this and to be able to reduce their "carbon foot print" with no longer needing to purchase plastic bottles!

I used the Steri-Pen to purify water successfully for 4 or 5 day hikes but yesterday the UV light wouldn't come on and all I received was the frown. I'm not sure what the problem is. The battery is still good. It worked so nicely before.

Comments about SteriPEN Journey Water Purifier:
Leptospirosis is a real risk where I hike and Steripen gives me the peace of mind I need.
When monsoon is upon us, creeks and river can be turbid so I use it together with Aquamira Frontier Pro. Unlike others who use the AFP as a gravity filter and wait before using Steripen, I do it reverse : collect water, Steripen it and drink it direct through the AFP : water on demand and I do not need to waste time waiting. Gravity setup only when water is turbid - so I gravity out 1 liter and then Steripen.
When traveling to rural areas, I may be confident that the drink I am buying is boiled but I am unsure on the cleanliness of the ice cubes/ unhygenic handling , so I will Steripen the drink.
What is not mentioned in the manual is how you can treat 3L at one go by running 3 Steripen doses in sequence of 270 seconds (not filter 1L by 1L). This is how it was done in testing for military use and its effectiveness remains the same.
I don't have any issues with CR123 because my lights are all powered by lithium CR123s - they give the best current draw and more capacity for my lamps and to the Steripen. I fall in the minority where I will opt for CR123s anytime over AA alkalines setup.
IMO it is essential gear, no question.

Comments about SteriPEN Journey Water Purifier:
My friend and I took two of these, brand new, on a two month trip in South America. They worked great, and we sterilized the water everywhere we went and never got sick. They require expensive batteries that are hard to find. Also, they don't really take batteries... the extra batteries that we had bought ahead of time from REI didn't work in the steripens (but worked in other gadgets back home) and several other batteries we brought abroad just didn't work in the pens (the pens couldn't read them, but our other gadgets could). By the end of the trip, both of the steripens had broken. Choose a different version that's more reliable, it was terrible to only drink bottled water for the last few weeks!

Background: I started with the old steri-pen (yellow & black.) After using it on two trips, I found a hideous smell coming from it. Apparently the batteries had overheated and melted the inside of the unit. This may have been due to bad batteries, but the batteries were the ones that came with it, so I simply returned it. Swapped it out for an Opti (the green one.) That one inexplicably failed after testing at home and left me high and dry forcing me to cut a five day trip short when I ran out of fuel from boiling all my water. I returned that one as well and "upgraded" to the Journey:
The Journey is larger than the others and a bit unweildy and less solid feeling. This however is more than made up for by the LCD indicator, which is a huge plus, especially since it supposedly indicates both battery life and sucess or failure of the purification cycle. Of course none of that does any good if the unit does not work reliably, which of course it did not in the feild.
It worked at home fine (1900 ft 72 degrees) worked unreliably on the AT (5000 ft, 45 degrees) despite changing batteries, warming batteries talking nice (and otherwise) to it, all to no avail.
Interestingly, it worked again when I got home.
I don't know the cause of failure, but I am highly suspicious of the battery compartment and the water tightness of the seal. It seems likely that even when properly secured (something easy to mess up) that water can leak in there. This may or may not be what's causing my inconsistent operation, but the botom line is I can't trust this thing and it's the third strike from me from this manufacturer.
