Comments about REI Alpine 50 Plus Pack - Special Buy:
I have bought almost a dozen different packs in search of the perfect pack. I commute to work on my motorcycle, and I needed additional room. This pack hugs your body, it fits snug and does not have too many straps flying around and hitting me (as other hiking packs have.) I actually bought both the 50 and the 35 series, the only difference aside from the color, is that the 50 is about 4 inches deeper from top to botton. I wanted the extra room for my motorcycle, so I stuck with the 50 series. There is a small internal frame that is removable, I took it out for my day to day ride, but if I were to travel, I would insert it to add stabilization to the load. Great pack overall, I love REI and their products.

Comments about REI Alpine 50 Plus Pack - Special Buy:
I have used this pack for carrying field equipment, including rock specimens, and it seems to be tough and durable. The color scheme is better than what I expected from the photo. I also like the large capacity and various pockets. The shovel pocket is a nice design and is very useful, although it would benefit from having some webbing on both sides of the "gap" to keep things more secure.
My only serious complaint with this pack is that the shoulder straps are several inches too short. I'm 6'1" and have a big upper body and the straps need to be longer for a comfortable fit. I suspect they would fit someone 5'10" or shorter. Anyone larger than me would have trouble wearing the pack for any length of time. Longer and better designed shoulder straps would give this pack a more universal fit. Other than this problem, it's a fine pack, especially for the low price.

Comments about REI Alpine 50 Plus Pack - Special Buy:
If you want a small, quick-trip pack, this is it. Not a lot of pockets, but there are sufficient strap holders to lug your gear. Go pick up some straps at your local store for your sleeping bag. Enough room across the top for your small tent and sleeping pad. I use this pack for minimalist, short stays. Much better than lugging around something huge and half full.

Comments about REI Alpine 50 Plus Pack - Special Buy:
I love this pack! It's not so bulky but not to light. It's got just the right ammount of pockets.
When this wears out I'm getting another.

Comments about REI Alpine 50 Plus Pack - Special Buy:
I love love love the waist/hip straps - they're very supportive and help take some of the stress of the load off your back and shoulders. It's perfect for bike commuting though I wish the mesh inner pocket was just a smidge bigger so that my laptop would fit in there and not move around so much. The bag provides extra room but not quite enough for a weekend backpacking trip...unless you are an ubber minimalist and strap a bunch of your gear onto the pack. It could maybe use more pockets but that all depends on your needs. Nalgene bottles are too wide and will not fit in the side pockets. All in all, it has a bunch of nice organizational features and it's a good pack!
