i used this product for a weekend camping getaway with a couple friends. I was able to place a couple of chairs, sleeping bags about 4, a couple 2 person tents and other random camping gear and had room to spare, while i place a huge cooler in my trunk.

great: it explands, thats a plus!

not so great: the straps start to flap around when you drive, make sure you have some tape to anchor it down.

We purchased this to use as our last carrier had deteriorated in the last trip. I was quite pleased with the 17 cu feet of space and was able to cram a lot of items in it. Which was nice to have some extra space in the car. There was some rain during our trip, but not a total downpour, so I can't comment to much on the water resistance. I didn't have issues with the straps as they tucked away easily.

Bought the Thule Tahoe Roof Bag for a camping trip. It was so incredibly easy to install! (all by myself) The bag has an extendable zipper part but the bag was so big that we were able to fit all of our camping gear in without even using the extention part (2 tents, 4 sleeping pads,4 sleeping bags,3 chairs,stove,beach towels,clothes...) WOW! How did my family ever live without this? It made our family "mini vaca" so much more enjoyable, allowing more room in the car. The Thule roof bag looks nice too. It even comes with it's own storage bag. This bag was worth the money for sure.

TOO MUCH STUFF NOT ENOUGH ROOM! I used this bag for additional storage on our trip down to our Casa in Mexico. This bag held 2 King Size and 4 Standard size Pillows, 100 Hangers in 2 boxes, 4 full Garment Bags of clothing 1/2 bag mine and the rest Hers! 4 pair of boots and shoes 4 bags of who knows what and a Partridge in a pear tree Ha! Now we have space for our two cats and our Dog. The 17CU.ft of extra space was just huge and just what we needed. Packed well was somewhat aerodynamic considering anything on a roof. WE saw about 1 or 2 mpg decrease in our SUV understand too we were fully loaded for our 6 month stay.
This bag saw 3 days of heavy rainfall while driving and parked. In researching this and other Car Top Bags found that none are waterproof tho the Thule Tahoe better than others so, I invested 3 dollars and got a plastic couch cover which I lined the inside of the bag before loading it up. The bag in the end of 1700 miles and 12 hours of rain while driving had 1.3 cups of water spread about the bottom of the bag to the depth of 1/16th in. The plastic liner kept everything dry. I also zip tied all loose cinch straps to keep from flapping. Also noted the bag did not shift, billow,float or become adrift nor make any noise. Overall real happy with the Bags sturdy construction. Saw nothing at all in wear and tear. And with washing the bugs off looks brand new. Recommendation: If you live or plan to go where it may rain and use the Thule Tahoe, do yourself a favor line your bag with plastic or use plastic to bag your stuff. Rain at 60 MPH gets in.

This bag is awesome! My wife and I took a road trip this weekend and used it for the first time. We bought it so the two of us, our two kids, and 60-pound boxer could all fit in the car without being sandwiched together and it worked great!When you expand the roof bag, there's an incredible amount of space. We were able to fit our two-seater baby jogger and two large duffle bags without any problem! And once we got to our destination, we took the duffle bags out and closed the expansion panel and fit the baby jogger snuggly.I read the other review before I purchased the bag and saw the problems with the excess from the compression straps. He was right. Thule should put a piece of elastic to tuck that excess, but four rubber bands around the compression strap buckles and you're off an running. The rubber bands held the excess snuggly and we never heard any flapping on the roof of our Honda Pilot.We also didn't drive through any rain, so I can't comment on the water resistance/proofness, but the bag's material seems like it'll be pretty water resistant with the exception of the seam created by the zipper. But if you use water resistant/proof bags, then you should have anything to worry about.The biggest cons are: 1) Thule doesn't include anything for the excess compression straps, seriously - [$] and they can't include four pieces of elastic?. 2) It would be great if there was a way to make the zipper-seam water-proof vice water-resistant. I know I didn't go through rain, but I know that a heavy downpour would get in through the zipper. However, it's a lot easier to store this bag in it's storage pouch than it would be a hard-shell top, so you get what you pay for...I would recommend that any large family that wants to add a little more space in the vehicle for long road trips get this bag. It's worth it!

We fit 2 cots, 2 sleeping pads, 12x12 tent, 4 sleeping bags, camping stove, stove stand, 4 jackets, 4 pillows, and 2 towels in the bag. It still seemed like it had more room to spare. The straps came loose and would rattle. We pulled off 6 times to fix the last 2 times we used duct tape to keep the straps held tight. The bag would have gotten a 5 star rating from me if there was a pocket or some place to put the straps. It also rained while using the bag and the items towards the top of the bag by the zipper did get damp.
