Comments about Yakima DoubleDown Hitch Rack - 4 Bike:

We've mounted to the hitch of our Yukon XL. The fit is OK, but there is some slop such that the rack sways about 10 degrees. It is not easy to fit four bikes on this rack. We have one adult road bike, one adult hybrid, and two children's mountain bikes. I can get them all on, but it takes me a good 15 minutes of trial and error. It's easy to fit two or three bikes, but for four, it's like a jigsaw puzzle to get them all on. If you plan to regularly take four bikes, spend the extra [$] to the get the 5-bike version. It will be minimal money very well spent. The rack is not light either - probably about 40 pounds. However, except for the sway, it's well built and very solid. There's nothing flimsy about this product.I have some regret not spending the extra bucks to get the Swing Daddy, however. It is inconvenient not being able to access our hatchback while the bikes are on the rack. While you can tilt down the loaded rack for access, it's probably not recommended by Yakima, and it's definitely not easy to prop-up nearly 85 pounds of bikes back into the upright position.

I am a 50+ female, and assembled this myself, only needed help to get the pin thru the hitch. I can fit my mountain bike and also my recumbant bike with no help. Easy fit into 2 in hitch. Very easy assembly

Comments about Yakima DoubleDown Hitch Rack - 4 Bike:

It is really designed for a small hitch. When you put the adaptor bracket on it for the two inch hitch the rack leans out/down about ten degrees so if you hit medium to large city bumps the rack will bounce within the hitch besides bouncing with the vehicle. This can really bounce the bikes.

Comments about Yakima DoubleDown Hitch Rack - 4 Bike:

It would get five stars if it didn't loosen up so soon - it was purchases in late June. We installed it with an extra washer so it's not loose left and right, but it's loose up and down.

However, it's still a great deal! It's sturdy and so easy to use. I sometimes I forget I have it on!

Comments about Yakima DoubleDown Hitch Rack - 4 Bike:

the rack it itself is actually great, easy and simple to use. it's not as stable as an other brand of rack that i borrowed, but that other rack only works w/2" hitch. i have a 2" hitch so it being adjustable to the 1 1/2" was not a selling point. What i disliked the most was that you can't use the standard hitch pin lock w/ this item, you have to spend more $$ and buy a lock made by "YAK". they do though have a cool kit that includes the lock for the rack and a cable that locks the bikes to the rack,of course for more $$. we bought this item last minute so we didn't get to research or shop around. i think item is kind of pricey.

Comments about Yakima DoubleDown Hitch Rack - 4 Bike:

while the product seemed perfect, the proprietary hitch tongue receiver pin will only work if you have easy access to your hitch. on my Mini Cooper (and i would guess any vehicle with a hitch that is not openly exposed under the bumper), the hitch is inside the bumper, so the non-standard, screw-type receiver pin is not do-able.

looks like a fine product - but not for every hitch!!!

Comments about Yakima DoubleDown Hitch Rack - 4 Bike:

My wife and I bought this to move our XC bikes (GT Marathon 2.0s). I've got a men's and she's got the ladies version and they are both full suspension bikes. The rear suspension made it very difficult to get the bikes into the cradles and for my wifes bike I had to actually swap out one of the cradles to make the bike fit since her bike has a smaller frame. I also could not open the clamp as far as itneeded to go and the other cradle did not lock completly, so the cradles would move on the arms with both bikes mounted...that didn't work too well for us.

I think this rack would work great with road bikes or mtn bikes with no rear suspension...just watch out if you have a full suspension bike.

The rack is very stable, you just need to use a socket wrentch to tighten the bolt on the reciever and the bolt on the bar where the rack folds down...after tightening both bolts, the thing is rock solid.

The good news is that REI rocks and let us exchange the rack (bought in Aug and exchanged in Dec, wanted to try as many times as possible to get the bikes to fit) for a Yak Holdup. They even gave us the saleprice since we bought the Doubledown when it was 20% off. They still honored the sale and gave us 20% the holdup even though the sale was long gone...nice.

BL: I would recommend the rack depending on the frame on the bike you have. If you can afford the extra $$ for the Holdup I would consider going with the Holdup.

Was so surprised reading reviews prior to going to REI that i didn't know what to buy. I naturally took the least expensive way to solve my problem, couldn't be happier. ROCK SOLID on the back of my Jeep 2" hitch and if someone says it's not they installed it wrong. I have not tried other hitch racks but could not imagine one being better.

The directions for installing are good. I bought this bike rack on sale and you couldn't build a similiar product for what I paid for it. The features are great and it is easy to fit the rack into a 2 inch hitch. There is a little sway in the rack which was a concern for me at first. I haven't tried it, but I think it would be more difficult to load and adjust four adult bikes.
