Comments about Petzl Charlet Snowalker Ice Axe:
I only gave this 4 stars because I have no point of reference to compare. To me, it was worth every bit of money I spent on it.
It is WAY beyond the ergonomics and effectiveness of my old axe.
Bought this specifically for a solo ascent by middle milk glacier on Mt Jefferson (Oregon). My old axe was 25+ years old with a broken pick.
Chose it over Black Diamond (either one) because I prefer to see a rivet instead of however the BD axe head was attached. To me, the weight difference was a non-issue.
At ~7,300' the hard pack became very hard, like it had been Zamboni'd many times. Carving steps with
it was tedious and inefficient. Moved over to the rock ridge and continued up.
It preformed flawlessly in the ash and scree slopes, making the scramble up much more effective.
After making a few mistakes on a rock face climb, determined I was too tired and cold to continue (8,700'). Made my way back to the glacier and descended using a controlled arrest down to where the surface was soft enough to glissade the rest of the way (~1,000'). It really proved its worth during the descent.
My only misgiving about the axe was it's tether - the slide ring would bind when I needed to change hand positions quickly. I learned the trick to this - but this is one technique I recommend you practice before using it in the wild.

Comments about Petzl Charlet Snowalker Ice Axe:
I broke off the plastic head mount pounding an ice picket. Replaced with a black diamond Raven and no regrets. The Raven has a better head grip & no plastic to break. Buy this only if that axe is not available.
