I'm 6'2" and 240 pounds, so I quickly crush those cheap lawn chairs most discount stores sell. But I didn't want to spend $120 (or more) for a more durable camp chair. I settled on this chair at half that price and thought, "if it breaks I'll just take it back… [...]!" Well I've used this chair several times now and wanted to wait to be sure it would hold up before writing a review; so far, so good! This chair is fairly lightweight, folds up easily, it's stable and sturdy. It's perfect for car camping and many other outdoor uses. I intend to buy a second and maybe a third chair. It does sit a lot lower to the ground than many other camp chairs so take that into consideration.
I needed a new low profile chair for this years blues festival circuit. At 6' 250lbs I need something sturdy, comfortable and built to last. My previous all time favorite is no longer made and after 5 seasons was ready for the scrap heap. The REI Wilderness Recliner was the best of the bunch, low to the ground, holds my weight, nice lumbar support and real wood arm rests to help propel me out of the chair when I stand up. A cup holder and accessory pouch are thoughtful additions. My only complaint is that the seat width is about 21 inches no where near the 27 claimed open width. If you measure the outsides of the armrests you get 25 inches. If you have junk in the trunk you will not be happy in this chair. Fits me just fine though.
My wife completely adopted this chair on our 2 week beach vacation. She would not let ANYONE else use it - it became HER chair after sitting in it once! We spent 8 hours per day on the beach for 14 days and she said it was the most comfortable and durable beach chair she's ever used. It's not too low to the ground, and not too high, so it's easy to get in and out of. It is also very light for how strong it is. This chair just feels very solid. I can see us using this for many more years. We spend 2 weeks on the beach every summer and have gone thru many chairs over the years. We'll probably buy 2 more before the next trip - one for myself and my son! Only con is the price... but in this case, you get what you pay for!
I've owned this chair for two years and it is by far the best portable chair I have ever owned! I take it to the beach and camping and it does the job just right. It's way more comfortable than a folding bag chair and has held up well through saltwater, sand, and being banged around in the back of my truck. I only have one small issue and that's with the straps that adjust the back position. The buckles sometimes slip and I find myself reclining more than I want to be. But a couple of simple knots take care of that. Overall, a great chair. Highly recommended.
Ok, so you have tried hard wood chair and burned through about a dozen cheap folding chairs. Join the club. I was lost til I found this chair. I wanted some real structure and an easy recline but not a traditional patio chair. I wanted to use it at the beach, campsite and in a pinch by a pool. No it is not a backcountry chair and it does not fold in to a small little ball. But it is worth every inch in durability, comfort and ease. Give it a try, trust me in five years you'll still love this chair. Solid.
This is the most comfortable low folding chair I have found. I appreciate the wood arm rests. I will never use the floppy beverage holder, and will probably remove it. The small pocket on the front is nice for a phone, wallet and keys, but a larger, deeper, zippered pocket/organizer could have been added to that front panel. The chair is more comfortable with a small pillow over the top bar. The backpacking feature is a bit clumsy to use, but OK when you get in to it. The back ring on my chair is low profile and does not poke me in the neck. This is not a lightweight chair, so is best for car camping and short hauls. I wish it reclined more, for better stargazing.
This chair is very comfortable and well made for the sitting use. However, I was disappointed because it has a thick metal ring (where the backpack straps loop through) that sticks out about one inch that digs into my upper back when carrying it with the backpack straps. I bought the chair so that I could use it to bike ride over to the lake and sit on the beach. I cannot use it in this manner because it is not portable via bike. So, maybe GCI could add some padding to that ring or make the ring smaller so that it doesn't hurt as much. But it's still a great chair that is well made and comfortable and is best used for music festivals and sitting on the beach when I drive there.
Good chair, but ... Comfortable and lite. The shoulder straps make it great to carry while keeping your hands free. The chair seat does angle back, which makes it harder to sit up (say to tend a fire). The problem is the design. There is a cloth that loops around the tubing both in the front by your feet and under the seat (under your legs right behind the knees). Both of these "strips" move. The one by your feet isn't as big a deal. It just gets dirty and blocks your feet from going under the chair. The one under your legs moves around the front of the tubes and "bunches" making it uncomfortable as well as less supportive. No sure I would recommend this chair. It was very expensive as chairs go and should have been designed to prevent these two flaws.
Bought this chair for tent camping with my family. Easy for my 8 year old son to carry using the backpack straps. Easy for him to set up and adjust. Height is perfect for relaxing and cooking over a backpacking stove. Round legs won't catch, rip or tear tent floor. Getting organized in the morning was much easier in the GCI Recliner versus sitting on my sleep pad! Only minor issue is that the screws on the underside of the armrests tend to gouge the frame when the chair is closed, otherwise a great chair!
We use these chairs outdoors on the deck or grass. The kids like to use them indoors for watching TV when things get too crowded on the couch in the hot weather. This chair is very comfortable, provides excellent lumbar support, and reclines. The only thing I would change is the way in which the degree to which one reclines is adjusted. It is adjusted by tightening or loosening a strap that is attached to the seat on either side and runs through the back of the chair, and is a little difficult to adjust. The positive aspect of this is that the degree to which the chair reclines can be adjusted to any angle, rather than a few set angles as are many other chairs. Chairs fold relatively flat and thus are easy to store when not in use.
