Comments about Alps Mountaineering Dual Foam Sleeping Mat - X Large - Special Buy:

This is incredibly comfortable but was on the bulky end of the spectrum. I tried attaching it to the top of my pack but found the this "hammerhead" configuration made it difficult to fit between trees and rock faces. For backpacking I would suggest something a little narrower as long as you don't mind sacrificing comfort. I did a 12 mile, 2 day hike and found its comfort at the end of the day just what I needed. It would be great for car camping for someone that doesn't want to feel like they are sleeping on the ground.

Comments about Alps Mountaineering Dual Foam Sleeping Mat - X Large - Special Buy:

I must admit I use one of two extremes instead of this pad as a rule. I must admit I have never found and inflatable matress I liked. This Pad is one I will take snow camping because of it's closed cell pad. As a rule I use a Thermorest Z-Lite S. And enjoy a good nights rest. To get my wife to go camping with me I purchased the next step up in this type of pad the open cell foam is an inch thicker. One trip I could not find my pad and so took hers. It is a pound heaveir and rolled up takes up as much space as the rest of my pack. If I am just going up to enjoy a weekend I must admit I take the thick pad (I need it for all the ribbing I get.) You will know me because of the huge roll on top of my light pack. This unit shown here lays inbetween the the two extremes. If you love your air mattress you are not likely to enjoy this. If you find air pads never realy comfortable you may like this. Because of the open cell foam, you will need to defend it or it will not last long. But I must admit as my wife would not let me claim her pad; I have purchased my own with two + inches of open cell foam and carry it when distance, brush, and rocks are no object. When carrying this light mamoth it is hard to call myself an avid adventurer. If waffel crate does not suit you and ultra luxury is not your goal, air matresses are either too hard or you touch the ground this may suit you well. You will probably not get laughed at for carrying this. If thirty inches is just too wide for convenience do not hesitate to take a utility knife to this unit; it only needs to be wide enough to keep your arms out of the snow.

Comments about Alps Mountaineering Dual Foam Sleeping Mat - X Large - Special Buy:

I was looking forward to getting this, but it really wasn't worth even the discounted price in REI outlet. It is two layers, but both layers were of cheap quality. I was expecting camping pad quality, but instead, this felt cheaper made than a $10 egg carton pad from target for the bed. I think that my busted self-inflating 1.5" pad has more padding even though it won't hold air.

After reading reviews I expected this dual foam to provide some support and comfort. I think I felt every piece of dirt on the ground. Choose an inflatable instead. Even an inch of air will make a huge different. REI has great alternatives.
