REI Members get back an estimated $ 2.40 on this item as part of their annual member refund.

    The REI Member Dividend

The REI dividend is a unique benefit of membership in the REI co-op. It's comprised of your member refund—typically 10% back on eligible purchases—and/or your REI Visa® card rebates.

Each March, active REI members and REI Visa cardholders who earned a rebate receive a refund in the form of an annual dividend notice.

Only active members receive annual dividend notices. To maintain your active status as an REI member, you need to make net merchandise or shipping purchases of at least $10 per year, unless you joined that year. Member numbers are issued in one name and only that person receives the member refund. Your number can be used by others in your family, but it cannot be transferred to someone else.

Join 63-year-old adventurer Helen Thayer as she undertakes an inspirational journey through Mongolia's Gobi desert.

    • Author: Helen Thayer
    • Hardcover; 251 pages; black-and-white photos and maps
    • The Mountaineers Books; copyright 2007

In 2001, at the age of 63, renowned adventurer Helen Thayer fulfilled her lifelong dream of crossing Mongolia's Gobi Desert. Accompanied by her 74-year-old husband, Bill, and two camels, Tom and Jerry, Thayer walked 1,600 miles in 126°F temperatures, encountering fierce sandstorms, dehydration, dangerous drug smugglers and ubiquitous scorpions. For more than 60 days Helen struggled to keep moving through some of the most inhospitable terrain on Earth, despite a severe leg injury. Without sponsors, a support team or radio contact, hers is a journey of pure discovery and adventure.

  • Walking the Gobi takes readers on a trip through a little-known landscape and introduces them to the culture of the nomadic people whose ancestors have eked out an existence in the Gobi for thousands of years. Thayer's respect and admiration for the culture of the Gobi and her gentle weaving in of natural history shine throughout this remarkable story.
  • Made in USA.
