Comments about Gregory Deva 85 Pack - Women's:
The hip belt broke after only 40 or 50 miles of hiking. Took it back to REI and they gave me a brand new Deva 85. It also broke after the same trail time and at the exact same place on the belt. The plastic belt starts cracking at a rivet hole. Then the crack works it's way to the top and bottom edges of the belt cutting the belt completely in half. Disaster on the trail! Judging by all the similar reviews, this pack obviously has a major design flaw with the hip belt. Gregory must know about this but they keep selling it. Shame on them. I would expect higher quality from Gregory. If you own this pack, check the hip belt. It's probably already cracking at the rivets. Having the hip belt completely break through with 10 miles to go and a heavy pack is no fun!
This is really a shame because, other than the completely disastrous hip belt design, this was a really great pack. For the first few hikes it was working great! All the pockets, compartments, comfort, and convenience made living on the trail for weeks at a time a real joy.

Comments about Gregory Deva 85 Pack - Women's:
I had not backpacked since the mid-70's and just returned from 7 days in the backcountry of Yosemite. I ended up buying the small size even though I had expected to buy the medium. When I first got this pack, I was overwhelmed by all the compartments, adjustable straps and complexity. But then I began to do conditioning hikes in prep for my upcoming high altitude, multi-day back country adventure. I quickly learned how to balance the weight of what I was carrying, how to adjust the belt and straps and how to optimally pack to use all the various compartments.
This pack was truly a delight. I never felt overwhelmed by the weight or unbalanced. I did not have to readjust the straps once I was set to go. I carried a DSLR camera and case strapped on the waist belt which worked very well. I loved all the compartments and the ease of accessing them from either inside the pack or outside.
I'm looking forward to my next trip in Olympic NP this month where I will again be backpacking.

Comments about Gregory Deva 85 Pack - Women's:
I am far from an expert reviewer as this was my first ever backpack purchased and I just completed my first backpacking trip in the backwoods of Alaska. But I was very pleased with the function of my pack. I loved all of the options for loading my pack and different access locations so I could get to just my sleeping bag or just my thermarest conversion chair or the outside pockets to my snacks. There is also a detachable fanny pack that I used for a day hike.
The things that were most difficult for me were to access my water bottle from the outside pouch. It was too far behind me and angled in a way that I would have to ask others to put it back in so I didn't have to take my heavy pack off.
Also, while there's a spot for a bladder and tube to come out of the pack there is no hook to hold the bladder up inside the pack.
I've been told by other afficinados from my backpacking trip that this pack I chose to buy was a great pack.

Comments about Gregory Deva 85 Pack - Women's:
Just returned from a 42 backpacking trip and am sorry to say that the Gregory Deva only held up for the first ten days. Twelve people in our group had either this year's model of the Gregory Deva 85 or Whitney 95 and eleven of those came back with broken hip belts and destroyed zippers. I understand Gregory is recognized for their comfortable and reliable packs but 32 days of carrying all the weight on my shoulders convinced me otherwise.

Comments about Gregory Deva 85 Pack - Women's:
This backpack was my favorite thing I owned....until the hip belt broke and left me carrying 50 lbs on my shoulders on the middle of the John Muir Trail last summer. I had only used the bag on 4 or 5 weekend trips prior to the JMT. The plastic hip belt snapped on both sides near the bolts after just over 100 miles on the trail. Luckily I was carrying an extra strap with me which was used to weave through the broken pieces as reinforcement and I was able to continue on to the end of the trip. As comfortable as the bag originally was and as happy as I had been up to that point, it was a huge disappointment. If this design flaw was ever remedied, this would be the perfect extended trip backpack. Unfortunately I was left with bad feelings toward the bag and will likely not purchase another Gregory product again. I would not recommend this bag to anyone who feels that reliability is an important quality in their gear.

Comments about Gregory Deva 85 Pack - Women's:
I've recently upgraded my Dueter ACT 90+10 for something more comfortable and user friendly. Everything about this pack is amazing, it's unbelievably comfortable, easy to pack, great access zippers and pockets and despite being a beautiful Deva, totally burly.
*Note: A few buyers complained about hip belts breaking. There was one model with a faulty plastic and all of those models were recalled and the plastic was changed and that is no longer a problem

Comments about Gregory Deva 85 Pack - Women's:
I absolutely love this bag. I've taken it on three backpacking trips so far totaling about 80 miles and I don't have a single complaint. It's very comfortable...easy on the shoulders and hips. There are SO many useful pockets and the four access points to the main compartment are very handy. The removable top "daybag" is comfortable to wear around the waist. Also, I love pockets on the waist band, perfect size for a Clif bar and my camera, so I don't have to stop. The bottle holster is very useful for people who don't like to use bladders like me. I would highly recommend this bag....a friend has already traded in her old bag for this one and also loves it.

Comments about Gregory Deva 85 Pack - Women's:
I needed a big pack for doing a ten day trip in the Sierras with no resupply stop. After reading some of the reviews in here, I wasn't even considering buying it. But, given the limited selection of women's expedition packs, I had to try it on. The other packs didn't even come close to it in comfort. At this point, I contacted Gregory to ask about the reports of the waist belt falling apart. They said that they had had one bad batch and had corrected the situation.
Since I've had an excellent experience with a Gregory pack in the past, I took them at their word, and bought the Deva 85.
While nothing can make 50 pounds feel good, this pack made it as good as it could get. The waist belt fits like a charm, the shoulder straps are well padded also, and the pockets are in all the right places. It's a very sturdy pack, which makes it heavy, but you can't have everything! I would definitely recommend this pack to a friend.

During a 30 day trip, the pack's hipbelt broke around day 15. I have read multiple reviews where the same thing happened--this is a disappointing design flaw.

Comments about Gregory Deva 85 Pack - Women's:
I traveled for 5 months around South America with this backpack, and had to pack for both cold mountain weather as well as tropical beach weather - and was impressed at how much I could stuff into the backpack (I started off with 16kgs and at one point carried up to 21kgs in this). I liked the various compartments, and that I can pack from both the top and the front. I was a little disappointed with the wear and tear - with only 5 months use, I had lost one of the chest fasteners through baggage handling, and some of the waterproof material from the lower compartment had scratched off. Minor faults which are more than outweighed by the pluses.
I would also have liked to secure the contents of my backpack with a few locks. However as the top of the bag was secured by drawstring only, I was unable to lock my bag. I had considered buying extra cable netting locks - but that would have added an extra 1.5 lbs to my load.
