Comments about REI Campware Percolator - 9 Servings of Coffee:

I've made many pots of coffee in this percolator and I haven't had any problems with boil over since the first time that I used it. The instructions clearly state that the temp should be reduced on the burner once the pot has started perking. I didn't pay close enough attention to the pot the first time that I used it and it boiled over. However, since then I've always followed the instructions and limited the amount of water to right at the start of the spout, and I haven't had a problem with boil over since.

I can't give the pot a 5 star rating because I think that it should only be labeled as an 8cup pot instead of a 9cup pot. I've only been able to successfully make coffee in the pot if I limited the level to about 8cups instead of going all the way to the 9 cup mark.

Also, since the pot is made out of stainless steel it takes a while to heat up, and once it does heat up, it takes a while to cool down. This could be the issue with some of the other reviewers. You can't go off and leave this pot once the water gets near the point where it starts to perk, or it will go badly.

Inner coffee basket too small to handle expanded
coffee for 9 cups so it boils over. (4 cups on
              low heat was OK.)

Comments about REI Campware Percolator - 9 Servings of Coffee:

I almost didn't buy it because some reviewers had boiling over issues. I bought it last week and I haven't had that problem. I start moderate heat and turn it way down when it starts perculating. (Mad bubbling quickly drops to intermittent bubbles).
I let it perc for 20+ minutes because I like a stronger brew. The coffee is hotter than my expensive coffee maker. The strainer is metal instead of the plastic ones they now sell for the same price. I love it and my guests rave about it. Prefer this stainless to enamel ware-which can chip. Should do just as well on a camp fire.
Wishing you all a great brew!

Comments about REI Campware Percolator - 9 Servings of Coffee:

Bought this coffeepot several years ago to replace our cheap aluminum coffee pot. This pot is very well-made; it has a wonderfully cushioned handle that does not burn my hands, is well-balanced so that a full pot is easy to handle, and it is very easy to clean. Plus, it looks good! The glass top finally broke on our last camping trip, but a piece of plastic over the percolator stem prevented coffee from spewing all over. Now that we're home, I'm picking up a new top on my next trip to REI.

I've not had any boil-overs, but I do turn down the flame to very low once the coffee begins to percolate, which is the recommended procedure when using a stove top percolator.

Comments about REI Campware Percolator - 9 Servings of Coffee:

I was hesitant to purchase this after reading the reviews, but my lady needs her coffee and I'm dragging her into the woods for some trips this year. This product will only work properly if you pay attention to it! Once the pot is boiling, turn the heat down very low and keep an eye on it, let it go for about 10 minutes and then enjoy. If you do not reduce the heat it will boil over, but that is how a percolator works.

I have found using a filter and some course ground coffee works best at keeping the grounds out of the pot, you are still bound to get a little bit in your cup but hey... you are camping this isn't starbucks. After doing this a few times you will find it makes a delicious cup of joe, some would argue better than a drip pot!

I use this coffee pot every day. Never had a boil over. NEVER... It makes the best coffee. Its the best part of my day. Cleans up real good too. I would not change anything about it.

I don't know why the other posters had trouble with the pot boiling over. I guess they just can't make coffee. lol Maybe they had the stove turned up too high. I perk on an electric stove; heat setting #6; on a stove with 10 heat settings.

Bought this coffee pot last summer, and it worked well. No boil over if you let it heat up slowly. However, started to notice glass chips around the percolator top, and then on this last trip, the glass broke right in half. Not banged of stressed, just cracked. For the price, definitely thought the pot should last more than one season.

Easy to use and clean. The best use is for car-camping. I would not use it for backpacking. I was tempted to buy the open-country brand, but it is cheaply built and dents. I fill this one up to the 7 cup line and have not had it boil over yet. With any percolator you have to keep an eye on them, or they will all boil over. If you want easy, fast coffee buy instant coffee....

Bad review gave me pause, but after looking at the pot in the store I brought it home. After several uses now both at home and camping I am very glad I bought it. Absolutely NO boil overs! Key is to turn flame down as low as possible after perk starts... but have seen some propane stoves that don't get very low. One thing though... when done perking, give basket a minute to drain before pouring that first cup or it may dump hot coffee on your toes.
