Comments about Black Diamond Momentum AL Harness Package:
Sweet, my first REI review!!!
I've done a bit of climing in an earlier life and I'm starting to get back into it. This combo was a great way to pick up some of the essential gear all in one shot.
I'm really impressed with the harness. It has worked great for me so far. It has a good amount of padding and is very comfortable. I also love how it has a lot of gear loops and some features for trad climbing (which I'm starting to get into) and for big walls (if I ever need them!) If I was rating the harness alone, it would be 5 stars.
As other reviewers have said, the chalk bag is a bit small. It will still work ok, but I'm planning on picking up a bigger one soon. My hands will still fit in there, but just not as easily as I would like. I think if I were going to make this purchase over again, I'd get this harness by itself, the same big locking 'biner, the Black Diamond ATC device with adjustable friction, and then a bigger chalk bag. The ATC that comes with this combo works great--no complaints other than I wish it had adjustable friction. But if you are just doing indoor/outdoor sport climbs, it should work just fine for ya.
A couple things:
I have a 32" waist. The REI website lists my size for this harness as a "medium." I actually bought the large by mistake, and then tried it on when I got home and found that it fit pretty well. I was about to return the harness for a medium, but then decided try on the medium first and found that it was way too small. So just be aware of that.
Also, when I got the harness, the belay loop was twisted around - the little pieced of webbing that connects the two sides of the lower tie-in loop (around the lower part of the belay loop) had been put together backwards, so I had to get a pair of tweezers, undo it, and then rethread/double-back myself. It wasn't too big of a deal, but at first I couldn't figure out why the harness wasn't fitting right when I had the leg loops on the right way!! So be aware of that also.
Otherwise, a great combo.
Comments about Black Diamond Momentum AL Harness Package:
This is a follow up review on the chalk bag. Initially I thought it would be too small, however, I decided to just use it and see how it would work. It is a small chalk bag, but I think it's going to work out just fine--certainly well enough that the purchase of another bag isn't really justified--Number one, it holds chalk, and number two, I can get my hands in there in almost any situation where I need. What more could you ask?
Also, one thing I forgot to add on my review; the chalk bag comes with some hokey laces for attachment around the waist, rather than a webbing belt with a Fastex type buckle that most other chalk bags come with. I decided to remove the laces and purchase a 36" or so webbing strap with a Fastex type buckle from my local REI store and have been using that for waist attachment. That set-up has been working very well, and the strap will only run you a few bucks. I suppose you could use a 'biner to attach the bag to your harness, but to me that just seems like a waste of a good 'biner.

Comments about Black Diamond Momentum AL Harness Package:
I climb approximately 1-4 times a month. I have been using this harness and gear for over a year now and I love it. One thing that might be improved is possible widening the leg straps maybe an inch or two. After climbing for about 4 hours, the thin leg straps tend to dig in just a lil. Everything else though has been perfect. My climbing buddy got the same package right after I told him of the great deal. We both have enjoyed Black Diamonds well built products. This package is a great idea for someone who is just getting started.

Comments about Black Diamond Momentum AL Harness Package:
Have used the harness & chalkbag for two years now, can't complain (very comfy) but after my biner&atc got stolen I opted for something with more grip. Wouldn't mind a larger chalkbag either.
Still, I tell my friends "Buy shoes, then buy THIS package"

Comments about Black Diamond Momentum AL Harness Package:
The GOOD: This is a very comfortable harness that is affordable and durable.
The BAD: This harness does not, repaet "DOES NOT" have a double back locking belt system. After taking a fall or repelling down from a run or two the harness will loosen around the waist, You can't just pull the belt to tighten. Instead having to unlock two looops, re-tighten, then re-loop and re-lock. not a big deal but extra time and inconvenience, I would rather have a different harness. hope REI will exchange it!

Comments about Black Diamond Momentum AL Harness Package:
I have not been climbing for long - so I cannot give any expert opinion. I have not owned it long - so I can not give a year long review with how wore down it is. But as a novice, what I CAN say that compared to rental gear this harness is amazing, and it is a great product to get starting off - and my more advanced friends said that it should last a long time.

Comments about Black Diamond Momentum AL Harness Package:
ive used this package for years, i facilitate ropes courses all summer long & am always in my harness. I sport & top rope & i got this b/c of the comfort of the harness, adjustable leg loops & package deal.
problems are the adjustable leg loops, so your friends with large legs can still ask to borrow it(not that i recommend lending climbing equip. to ANYONE!)
The chalk bag that came with it was too small for my hands, i've got big hands though.

Comments about Black Diamond Momentum AL Harness Package:
Went to REI store for first time today looking for more climbing chalk. Saw this nice combo and had to buy! Great buy for the price and includes all the necessary gear.
However the sizing is way off. The girl in the store that was helping me, said that I needed a size medium because I have a 33" waist.
Once I got home I immediately went to my local rock gym to try it out. Needless to say, a medium was the wrong size. Even though the sizing clearly states that the medium is for a 30-33" waist. So now I will need to send back and wait for the large to be sent (I don't live near the REI store).
All in all it is a great product...but the sizing charts needs to be seriously reconsidered.

Comments about Black Diamond Momentum AL Harness Package:
I'm a fairly new climber, with most of my experience being indoor (and seconding trad and sport a few times),and this is a great package if you're beginning to climb, or getting back into it. The harness is comfortable to hang in, has a good belay loop and sturdy gear loops. Some people say the chalk bag is a little small, but I don't seem to notice it (and I have fairly big hands). The big locking carabiner and ATC are both classics that work very well. The only complaint I have is the chalk ball that comes with it doesn't let very much chalk out, but chalk is cheap. This was my first real climbing purchase, and was definitely worth it. If my gear got stolen, and I had to buy new stuff, this would be my first purchase.

Comments about Black Diamond Momentum AL Harness Package:
I bought this package almost two years ago and am still using it. It is a great deal for the basic gear you need to start climbing. I go climbing once or twice a week mostly outdoors but have done some indoor walls too.
The chalk bag has a string on it that requires you too tie it onto the harness making it somewhat troublesome to detach from the harness if you are bouldering, but it takes all of a few seconds to untie a knot.
Overall, great product.
