Comments about REI Camp Stowaway Cot XL:

Please try this out in the store before buying. I didn't, and my back is paying for it. Not shown in the item's photo is a heavily reinforced seam running perpendicular to the cot's length between the middle two legs. The seam acts like a metal bar across the cot, and has the same effect that a metal bar would have on your lower lumbar region. I could barely walk after a night of very little sleep in this cot. Caveat emptor

Comments about REI Camp Stowaway Cot XL:

The hard seam across the middle of the back allows no lying position that is even remotely comfortable... for a cot this expensive and bulky it is unbearable.

Total torture device... unnacceptable for any use at all.

Comments about REI Camp Stowaway Cot XL:

Bought this for an annual car camping trip. Very wide, high off the ground, and has a handy storage flap on the side. However, fabric tension creates creates a virtual bar in the middle of cot, leaving two deep indentions on either side. This makes the cot impossible to sleep in; unless, of course, you like sleeping with your head and feet below your lower back. Although the cot does have a slip for a thermarest, it would take a substantial amount padding to ameliorate this "bar" in the middle.

Comments about REI Camp Stowaway Cot XL:

This product is well made with the exception of two very important plastic buttons that hold the canvas taunt at the center right and left on the cot. While getting ready for bed, I sat down on the cot and one of the plastic buttons popped off, stripping the inside of the cap. I weigh 185 pounds. This was only my second time using the cot. I had to sleep on the cross bars all night. This incident leaves me to worry that this may be a design flaw and a big problem over time.

        Service and delivery comments:

I called customer service and they are going to replace the cot. They were extremely helpful over the phone. They even reccomended that I post the problem.

Comments about REI Camp Stowaway Cot XL:

This was a great idea for a cot. However if you are small and weigh under 130 lbs, you can really feel where the stretching is the tightest creating a bump in the fabric. For heavier individuals I would assume this would be much less noticeable.

All in all it is a great cot, but it was not comfortable for my 5'7, 115lbs. I slept on it for 14 days straight... my back was killing me!

Comments about REI Camp Stowaway Cot XL:

I bought this cot as a spare bed when I had guests over the holidays. I slept in it for a week. You definitely have to use an insert for comfort, but why wouldn't you? That's the beauty of this cot. I have the XL REI 3.5 sleeping pad and it slips right into the sleeve. It fits perfectly and you don't feel the support strap through the pad. It's a bit on the firm/hard side even with the pad but I found it comfortable. The cot is longer and wider than you'd expect from it's compact, easy to pack design, a nice plus. I'm 5' 9", 170 lbs and it felt sturdy with no sagging. I love the design and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a great extra bed (love the storage bag and it couldn't be any easier to put up and tear down!). The side pocket is a nice feature for keeping your keys, eyeglasses, small flashlight. The fabric is durable and easy to clean.

Comments about REI Camp Stowaway Cot XL:

If you are car camping, this is a godsend. Big enough for a 6'4" person with dog. Found it very comfortable and did not notice any "lumbar seam" noted above. Best night's sleep ever. My giant buddy slept on it without complaint when he came to visit. Also great outside the tent for lounging and reading.

We bought this for our son after his old cot fell apart at Summer Camp. He slept on it the first night to test it out and a month later I can't get him back into his regular bed.

Comments about REI Camp Stowaway Cot XL:

What a great idea for a cot. Of all I've seen, this is the simplest to set up and take down. Just fold out and then fold up. For the 2 nights I used it, it appeared to made of decent construction material, but I'm not rocket scientist.

But that darn middle seam! There are six vertical supports, 3 on each side. And there is a structured seam between them all. The one between the head and feet are just fine. But the one that spans the middle is higher than the sagging material between and so one's hips (min in particular) could not find a comfortable position. Maybe a smaller person would find the seem falling near the belly or thigh and it would be okay. But for a 5'11" 240 lb guy, it fell right on my hips. I was so disappointed.

Off to find another one ...

Comments about REI Camp Stowaway Cot XL:

The only "drawback" to this cot is the sloped end at the head of the bed. It is good for propping up to read, etc. but I did get a neck crick the first night as it changed the angle that my neck was accustomed to for sleeping. I then turned it around and slept with the flat end under my head and had no more problems. I would like it if the head could adjust to lay flat instead of being fixed in the sloped position. Otherwise, it was great and even that issue was able to be corrected by switching the ends.
