Comments about Big Agnes Yampa +40 Sleeping Bag - Long:
I purchased the Yampa with the expectation that this would be great bag to keep me warm during a September backpacking trip to Isle Royle, Michigan where lows often flirt with the bags advertised 40-degree temperature rating and a light-weight bag is plus for a week-long outing. This bag is semi-rectangular and that is a plus for those who, like me, just do not like the constricted feeling of a true mummy bag. Pre-hike testing during the spring of 2008 inside a REI 3UL tent with outside temperatures in the mid 40’s proved that even when used with an Insulated Air Core pad, this bag would never live up to it’s temperature rating for a person with my body type and metabolism. I’m a 155 pound, 6 foot – 1 inch male, who often gets cold when they sleep at night. This bag is an versatile summer bag for tall or large sleepers, but beware, many will find that the bags lowest comfortable temperature to be 5-10 degrees higher than advertised. Even when wearing a head-to-toe sleepwear consisting of lightweight silk long underwear, fleece sox, a long sleeve synthetic shirt and a hat. I can actually feel the heat leave my body with this bag the top when temps approach 45-degrees. I just can’t stay warm in this bag below 45-degrees. There is no draft tube along the zipper with this model and the lack of a hood allows more additional cold air to enter. These should not be considered design flaws. Other BA bags have hoods and draft tubes. This one does not. The cinch cord at the head helps keep some warmth in, but if tightened too much, becomes uncomfortable around the chin. Overall, the cinch cord is a plus. If you are looking for the perfect 60 to 50-degree bag then this bag if for you. Weighing less than 2 pounds and filled with down on the top only, it is lightweight and compresses easily. The nylon is silky smooth inside. The Big Anges (BA) sleeve and pad system really do work, but if you are like me, you’ll want to add an overbag for colder temperatures, maybe a liner (it has liner restraint loops inside) or go to a heavier BA bag with a more extreme temperature rating. I've been sleeping in this bag for over year now--spring, summer and fall--but now bring an overbag if temps could fall below 45. Great brand. I recommend this bag when used within its design limitations.
