Comments about The North Face Hedgehog GTX XCR Cross-Training Shoes - Men's:
I bought these Gore-Tex cross-trainers because I walk early each morning, 7 days a week, on the fareways and edges of a golf course. Most of my walking, 8-10 miles per day (avg'd 9.3 miles/day for the past 4.5 years) is off cartpaths, on fareways and through rough. My walking motivation is maintaining health and climbing 14,000 ft peaks (summitted 25 14ers since 2004) in CO during the summer. I started wearing these shoes in early May, 2008. They started leaking when walking through short wet rough grass within 2-3 weeks, and got progressively worse. By mid-to-late June, they leaked like a sieve. After less than three months wear, the outer sidewall material is showing serious wear and failure, no doubt due to being wet and flexing daily. They are now cleaned and packaged in a shipping box, ready to return[...] My leather back-packing boots, 4+ years old, are Gore-Tex lined. They've covered a lot of trail and don't leak. No leaks --that's what I expect from a GoreTex low-cut cross trainer. I'll order Brand X or Y GTX low cuts ASAP, and keep testing until I find one that does not leak after many miles/months of wear.

Shoe is great when weather is inclement especially light rain or when ground is damp to soaking wet. Main drawback is the extremely small eyelets which made locating replacement laces difficult. Unable to locate replacement laces even from the manufacturer.

I almost didn't but these shoes based on the previous reviews but had good luck with TNF Rucky Chuckies so I figured I'd give these a shot. Totally happy with them. The tongue design is a little different and I had to pull them up a bit during break in but now they're great. On the laces: Tie laces normally then rotate lace loops 180 degrees - pull hard on loops. No double knotting required and look ma, no breakage!!!

Comments about The North Face Hedgehog GTX XCR Cross-Training Shoes - Men's:
I switched to this shoe 13 months ago after returning a pair of Vasque Blur trail shoes which were horrid. I needed something that was waterproof and durable as I was delivering newspapers at the time and running through the rain in Portland and peoples dewy lawns made my feet very wet. The waterproofing on these shoes is great. I have run through mega puddles and could feel the shoe keeping the water away from my feet. I have since stopped delivery newspapers and use this as my everyday shoe and sometimes go running in it when it's really raining and don't want to mess up my good running shoes.
Another part of the shoe I appreciate is the sole. It has shows some sign of wear, but nothing compared to other shoes of this type. Gotta love Vibram soles.
As other’s have noted, the main problem in the laces; I agree that a double knot is always needed. I have never had them break, but they are thin which can hurt your fingers if you are trying to pull them really tights.
Overall a great shoe and worth the money.

Got these shoes during the Labor Day sale. Have recently completed 5 day hike of the Smokies. Had rain on 1st and 5th days. Shoes remained extremely dry despite purposefully attacking puddles and impromptu streams. Very comfortable, good traction.

Comments about The North Face Hedgehog GTX XCR Cross-Training Shoes - Men's:
Just ordered my third pair in three years from REI so I have considerable experience with these shoes. I wear them every day of the year (except during summer in Atlanta) in all kinds of weather in all kinds of locations. I travel, hike and occasionally run in them until they start to look a little ratty and then use them for work shoes (construction, yard work, etc.) I am still using my first pair for that after over two years of heavy use. Some of the downsides other people mention are true. The laces are extremely thin, require double knots to keep tied and cannot be replaced with standard laces. When my first ones wore out I used 3mm line to very good effect-lasts forever and holds with single knots. Liner seam at top of the heels on first pair wore out quickly, just untying them first and exercising a little care when taking them off fixed that on the next pair. Have not experienced any other waterproofing or wear problems at all even in snow and standing water. I have a narrow heel, high arch, and wide forefoot, but with Superfeet insoles these things rock for me! If they fit you and the price is right buy them!

This a good shoe. It is waterproof and stable. But the tongue is poorly designed. This makes the shoe uncomfortable to wear. This is the first shoe I have ever had in which the shoe caused pain on the top of my foot.

I've had these shoes for a little more then 6 months and have been relatively pleased. However; for the price I would expect the shoe to last longer. I wear them almost daily on wet grass(golf course) and they were great at first and now they have cracked and are not waterproof anymore. For the price I would expect more....I will probably try a different shoe next time.

The first time I used these shoes was on an 11 mile Colorado hike. They worked great and I didn't have any trouble when we encountered snow and slippery conditions on the trail. Since then I have used them extensively on hikes, trail runs, and site seeing in the US and abroad. They are really great shoes and I will purchase the exact same pair if these ever wear out. After 1.5 years of use they are still in excellent shape and show little wear.

Comments about The North Face Hedgehog GTX XCR Cross-Training Shoes - Men's:
I have worn these on several backpacking trips that including backpacking in several miles and setting up a base camp and then doing day hikes from there. I wore this shoe the whole time and was pleasantly surprised with how comfortable it was. After wearing the shoe for 3 days of backpacking through Yosemite I had no blisters. The top of my foot was a little sore because of how large my arches are and the shape of the tongue on the shoe. Some improvements could be made here, but it has gotten better with more use.
The shoe was completely waterproof, even walking through small streams. While backpacking Yosemite I found the traction on rocks to be much better than my friends hiking boots, but traction in the snow to be slightly worse. Nothing to really complain about. Wearing the shoes with wigwam hiking socks worked perfectly for me.
