        Comments about MSR Outfitterwing Shelter:

On our last camping trip, I was loading our EZ-Up shelter and complaining about its large size. I had seen these before and they reminded me of the tarps we used in Patrol Camp. The only thing stopping me was the cost. Besides, did I really need it? Somehow our EZ-Up disappeared (I don't know how or why) and a want became a need.

First off, the packed size is tiny compared to our EZ-Up – my kid's three sleeping bags are bigger. I broke the cardinal rule about pitching gear for the first time in camp. The only thing I wish I would have done ahead of time was attach the guy lines to the tarp with bowlines.

Once that was done, setup was easy. The poles are about 8 feet, which allow for plenty of headroom around the typical picnic table. The fabric is hefty, and the fly is stable as can be. We had a few heavy breezes, and it didn't budge. (I suspect our old EZ-Up would have been trashed.)

I'm glad we have this, and I cannot wait to use it more.

          Comments about MSR Outfitterwing Shelter:

I pitched the wing during a blowing dust storm in the Black Rock desert. It took a little extra effort to pitch it by myself, but it wasn't impossible. The wing performed so well during a week of frequent 50 mph winds that several people mentioned how impressed they were with its aerodynamic design. Once you learn how to "fly" the wing, it's a great canopy and worth the price.

I suggest investing in a couple more adjustable 8 ft. poles to make the best use of the wing's unique shape. I bought very long steel stakes, too. Strong gusts will pop the furnished stakes out of the ground.

I haven't tried it in a hard rain yet.

            Comments about MSR Outfitterwing Shelter:

I bought this tarp for a canoe trip down the Green River in Utah. We used it every day for a week. It was easy to setup. It made the trip quite comfortable. We experienced both heavy wind (30 mph) & rain. The tarp held up well. The tarp also did a good job protecting us from the desert sun.

              Comments about MSR Outfitterwing Shelter:

I needed shade that was compact and would hold up to a little wind. I was excited to try this, but it failed miserably. A 10mph wind made setup very difficult. I had trouble getting the ends taught enough to keep the center high and ended up having to use a ratcheting tie-down in place of the front cord. There was a max wind of 20mph during the time it was setup which caused it to flap and all of the cords to loosen. The construction of this is quality, but the design is not too great. It's not worth the [$]unless you'll always be camping in perfect weather[...]
