these are good trail running shorts. pockets are definitely plentiful and useful. the outside non zip pocket seemed like a useless idea, until i ran a race and started with my rain jacket on then got too hot...i took it off and stuffed it into that outer pocket and ran with it like that with no problems. came in very handy.

i bought a pair of these a couple of years ago in black, and have run the heck out of them. i do all my long trail runs in them. i was bummed when they disappeared from the rei stores and website, but am glad they have returned. my only wish is that they still came in black. they are comfortable, have a couple pockets for gels and things, and are extremely durable.

Go into your local sports store and you'll find running shorts by Nike, Underarmor, New Balance, etc. that have open side hand warmer pockets(?!) and no zippered pockets(?!). These REI shorts have not 1, not 2, but 3 zippered pockets along with an outside pocket good for a granola bar or bandana storage. Store car keys, cash, credit card in the zippered pockets without worrying about stuff falling out of an open side pocket. No liner so you can wear whatever makes sense underneath. Great design.
