I have been wanting to pick up backpacking for a few years. I went into REI to try the Venus because of reviews, but this seemed to fit me better. I have a shorter torso and I kept hitting my head on the Venus. I have taken this pack out on multiple day-long hikes and it has been great. No soreness and it was easy to adjust if I wanted to change weight placement. Despite the few minor irritations, I have planned many more trips and weekend/camping trips. It's been great!
Pros: adjustable, comfortable, easy to load, handy pockets/Zippers, carried all the necesseties
Cons: Pocket on the hip strap is too small to put anything in, My short arms don't reach my Nalgene bottle with the pack on (had to use the bladder in pack), and the mesh fabric on the shoulder straps rubbed on my neck.

I took this pack on its maiden voyage out into the desert-like canyons in Western Colorado. We were on our first backpack trip--3 days/2 nights. Because we were heading into the desert, we had to pack in all our water--9 liters a piece. At the start of our trek, I was carrying 40+ lbs. This pack held it great. It never seemed to run out of room while I was loading it and when I was hiking, I certainly didn't feel as though I had an extra 40lbs hanging off my back!
Pros: The padding on the hip belt is awesome; all the adjustable straps help to give you a fit that's perfect for YOU; the mesh pocket on the back is perfect for just stuffing tons of extra stuff into; it's SUPER COMFORTABLE; we just tested it today and it holds a bear vault with plenty of room to spare!
Cons: Honestly, I cannot think of a single negative thing about this pack. I couldn't be happier with it!

i took this pack to patagonia for a 7-day wilderness trek last winter and it was a godsend. the trails we went on got a little treacherous at times, but i never felt like i had anything more than a daypack on my shoulders. and still, i was able to fit much more than i really needed for the trip in my bag.
i'm now packing for a 2-month long trip (combination of hitting the backpacker hostels in SE asia as well as a trekking trip in the himalayas), and am so glad that i already have this bag in my possession. thanks, REI!

This is a great pack for petite women. At 4'11 my torso fit great using the shortest setting. This pack is narrow through the shoulders, and also lets my neck move freely!
The pack is roomy enough to fit 3 litre hydration pack, clothing for 3 days, my water shoes, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, 3 man tent (REI Quarter Dome), snacks, rain gear, and other small items. This all weighed about 30lbs and it felt light as a feather with the various positioning straps adjusted just right.
I've done up to 3 day trips with up to 12 miles in one day. My shoulders, hips, and other pack resting points were not sore AT ALL! This pack is okay for a 7 day trek so long as you are ultra light or have someone load sharing with you.
My only con is packing and unpacking can be a little tricky since it is a pack with smaller volume. My husband usually carries our Bear Vault 500 but perhaps if I strapped the tent on the outside I'd be able to hold this item as well. It is a snug fit to get things in and out but not too hard if you stay organized with your gear.

I broke my back a few years ago and finding the right pack has been quite an adventure in itself. Eventually, the adjustable frame won me over. I never felt any weight on my shoulders, no rubbing or pinching anywhere, there's ample room for everything I need on a backpacking trip and then some. Love it.

I purchased this pack to go hosteling in New Zealand, and am now planning to take it on the John Muir Trail this summer. I've taken it on two 3-day prep trips.
I'm going relatively light on the trip (no tent), and everything fits, including the larger sized Bear Vault, as long as I put the Z-Rest on the outside.
I'm average height (5'4") but with a short torso, and this is the only pack that fit correctly.
This pack is really comfortable, and I'm very happy with it, but for a few small nitpicks (hoping the pack designers at REI read the comments):
1) The side pockets are not useful - one is made of cordura and has no give, and the other is made of stretchy material but not quite large enough to accommodate a liter bottle when the pack is full.
2) The straps that tether the lid to the pack could be made of wide elastic instead of nylon - they are too short and also hard to access.
3) It would be nice to have straps from the pack to the waist belt that can be tightened to pull the pack in towards the middle of the back.
Overall I highly recommend it - this pack inspired me to plan my first extended backpacking adventure!

My husband convinced me to try 'backpacking' (ok, baby steps first right?) We both took Ridgelines to EuroRail travel for 10 days last spring '08. My first backpack and about his 10th. We had so much room to spare the whole trip. Really impressed. I'm size 4, 5'2". He's 5'10". After two days I said "next time I'll pack less".

As the heading so aptly describes – I love this pack. I've taken it on strenuous trails, scrambled across rocks, hiked in wretchedly humid weather – it has held up like champ! I'm 5'3" and it fits perfectly, which makes carrying heavier loads a breeze. It fits everything that I could possibly need for a backcountry trip with room to spare. I attach my sleeping bag by using the bottom straps and put the tent poles & stakes in the stretchy long front pocket. There are 2 pockets on either side of the pack for water bottles – one of them has an elastic band and hold a bottle very well, but the other side doesn't have an elastic band & I've almost lost a bottle a time or two. I'm going to Colorado in a few weeks & I'll definitely be taking this pack. If you're short and are looking for a great backpacking solution – this is it!

Comments about REI Ridgeline 65 - Women's:
I bought this pack to replace my old beloved pack which was stolen last fall. I was very dismayed to discover that Kelty is not making that line of packs anymore, and I needed to find something new. I settled on this one as being the most comfortable economical replacement. Alas, it is not nearly as perfect as that old pack was. There are not enough pockets--only two side pockets, one of which has a zipper pocket on the outside, thereby preventing anything from fitting into the interior portion of it--and the front pocket does not zip shut, which makes it very difficult to store gear in there, as it can jump out, or fall out the holes at the bottom. The hip belt required three days of ongoing adjustment on the trail before it stopped bruising my hips. It does settle the weight of the pack very well, and the pack is well-balanced and easy to load. The shape of the belt is not correct for a woman's hips, though, and it had to be forced into shape through repeated adjustments, and then working the mesh to bend it while we were in camp. The many straps make it easy to compress the load down, or expand it as desired, though the one top strap over the main pouch is kind of strange and doesn't seem to do anything. The bottom access is helpful, but for some reason, the zipper is a J shape instead of a U shape, which makes it more challenging to get things in and out of the bottom of the pack. I would definitely reccomend the maker change that zipper to a full U shape so you can actually get into the pack easily at the bottom, instead of having to struggle with it.
The mesh on the straps is coarse, and abrades the shoulders if your sleeves aren't long enough, and the mesh on the back is also abrasive on the back of the neck. The pack balances weight very well, though, and is it self reasonably lightweight for long treks. The sizing is highly adjustable, and I convinced it to fit my small frame (i'm 5'1") easily. I have used it for 3 and 5-day backpacking trips, and for commuter travel and car camping, and my complaints apply only to its backpacking use, which was the primary use for which I bought it.
Overall, I'm not going to return this pack, which i spent my first trek-and-a-half with it thinking I probably would. Now that I have it broken in, I like it well enough. But I also would only reccomend it with qualifications. If I were doing the shopping all over again, I do not think I would choose this pack.

This pack was perfect for a recent 5-day hiking trip. I was able to fit my sleeping bag, tent, clothing, food and cooking supplies, along with a few extras, as well. The bottom zipper made it easy to get out my sleeping supplies at night, while the side and top pockets were perfect for snacks, maps, and my camera during the day. The padded straps tightened to the perfect size so that I was able to hike on a variety of trail difficulties without the pack sliding. I got used to the pack very quickly, and it distributed the weight so that I soon didn't even notice it!
