Comments about Thule Ascent 1700 Roof Box:
We're planning a long road trip, and determined that, although it holds more than one would think, our Mazda 5 will need some help in the storage department. After much discussion and measuring, we determined that the Ascent 1700 would indeed fit on the 5 (which is a pretty-small minivan). The spacing between the Thule AeroBars leaves a couple of inches front-to-back adjustment, with the stock antenna not being an issue and the front of the box overhanging the top of the window by maybe an inch or two. (The overhang is not visible from the inside.) Even as big as it is, the box is still light-enough that lifting it up to the rack is not impossible for one person.
We went with the 1700 as opposed to taller models since we want to minimize the hit to our gas mileage, and as opposed to shorter models since we need to maximize the storage space. (Having a box that can fit future nordic skis is a nice plus, since these can be quite long.)
Two items of note: the plastic is not terribly hard, which makes it less brittle (good) but somewhat easy to scratch (not so good). Also, according to the REI team member who helped us, even though the box (and others like it) can be opened from both sides, one should always make sure to keep at least one side locked at a time, leaving the key in the open lock - opening both sides of the box at the same time is "a very bad thing". According to him, "a very bad thing" involves taking the box back to REI where several hours are required to disassemble and return the struts to working order. (I'd reduce the overall rating by 1/2 star, just due to this design limitation.)

Comments about Thule Ascent 1700 Roof Box:
I love this box! In the summer we use it to camp, holds the family 6 person tent, sleeping bags, and a bag or two. In fall we do weekend outings, soccer games, or hikes, and pile in our stuff and go with no worries. If you get mud, dirt, muck, etc in it, just hose it out and set out to dry. We've neever had issues with water egress, even in driving rain. Winter is the best, we lock up two or three sets of skis from 170s to 210, and two or three snow boards from 147 to 167 and boots too! Easy to use locks (they take up some inside space, but managable to work around) holds the box snug to my factory rails and it goes up on my SUV fairly easy. I ussualy put it up myself and after a few times you get how to handle it without beating up your vehicle. I store mine above the garage door for easy access, but it was stuffed in the corner on end for over a year with no ill effects. I am replacing mine as my neighbor tried to park with it... They are not crush proof ;)

Comments about Thule Ascent 1700 Roof Box:
The Ascent 1700 roof box is excellent for extra storage for a road trip, but it is important to load it carefully. Keep heavy items between the load bars. A heavy item in front of the forward load bar can cause the unit to 'bounce' and hit the roof of the car at highway speeds. It is also imortant to keep loose items (blankets, jackets, shoes) clear of the latching points around the base or you may have difficulty locking the lid down. It is not uncommon for one of the latch points (at least 6 separate points)to slip out when latching, so check them before you drive.
It is also a good idea to retighten the four points that attach the box to the roof rack after driving for a while. It is an easy twist knob, so no need to unpack, just reach your hand in and twist.

Comments about Thule Ascent 1700 Roof Box:
Easy to mount & operate. Hauls my 210cm. x-c skis, not to mention my skis, snowboards, & packs. The most box w/ the widest range of uses for the money. If something happened to this box, I would replace it w/ the exact same box. I have one season of use, & I can tell you that I will never use a regular ski &/or snowboard rack again. I just leave my snow toys in the box, & head to the mountain, w/ a full quiver. No road salt or rusty edges. I should have bought this years ago!

Comments about Thule Ascent 1700 Roof Box:
Great size! Full snowboard bag with 2 boards, snowshoes, cross country skis, + soft goods. Aerodynamic and silent on top of my vehicle. Narrow dimension fits next to my surf board.
Downside- difficult to close. The lid is softer plastic construction than I expected, and I frequently need two people to close it. I have owned it for one month, and a base piece of one of the mounts has fallen off.

Lots of storage space...3 golf bags or kayak paddles could fit with ease.
