Comments about Thule Ascent 1600 Roof Box:
I have owned a Thule roof box that lasted for 15 years until I pulled into an underground parking garage (even then, it just cracked). The new design is much easier to install and easier to access.

Comments about Thule Ascent 1600 Roof Box:
I've done 100 mph with in on the roof fully loaded seems ok but it's only a year old, although I use it a lot. Fits 06 and 12 outbacksubaru perfectly the hatch will clear on both.

Comments about Thule Ascent 1600 Roof Box:
I am able to store 3 suitcases (small carryon, medium and large suitcases) in the box, in addition to some other random items. There is a lot of storage space in this rooftop carrier. Construction seems well, but I have only used it once.
I only have a SUV, and this is why I didn't check any other boxes for "best uses".

Comments about Thule Ascent 1600 Roof Box:
This cargo box was all that I was hoping it would be. I've owned it for about a year, and have used it on numerous trips (both short and long) and it has always proved useful. Holds soft luggage or sleeping bags or camp chairs with ease. Haven't used it with skis yet, but imagine that it will be handy then too.
I have a Nissan Pathfinder, and after moving the crossbars (not so easy), the box went on without any problems. The box is sized and positioned in such a way that it doesn't block the sunroof much.
I also like that the key can't be removed unless the box shuts properly. It gives a certain piece of mind that everything inside is secure.
Going on a trip of any duration? Do yourself a favor and get this great cargo box.

Comments about Thule Ascent 1600 Roof Box:
With two kids there's no way to get all of our gear in the car when we go skiing or camping. This box fits great on our Lexus ES330 (same size as a Camry) and gives us the extra storage we need.[...]Things I like about this roof box:- It's light enough that I can get on the car by myself.- Despite being light it's sturdy enough to handle 75 mph plus gusty winds.- No wind noise.- Opens on either side...very convenient. Lock is easy to operate. Not sure why another reviewer, whose key broke, was having a problem. I find the locks work very smoothly and I like the fact that they key doesn't come out unless the box is locked.- The "Quick Grip" mounts are great. You just turn the knobs inside the box to lock it onto the load bar. It only takes a few minutes to get the box installed.- Even though some water got inside while I was loading it up (it was raining heavily at the time) the floor of the box is designed to channel the water away from your gear. Everything stayed dry.- There are tie-down straps inside to keep your gear in place.- While Thule is based in Sweden, their products are made in the USA. Yakima is based in the US but their products are made in China.A few usage notes:- If you're using a wind fairing on your rack, remove it when using the roof box. You want the air to go underneath the box. Thule doesn't mention this anywhere.- It can't hurt to get the biggest box you think you might need. You'll use the space. Even with a sedan, don't be afraid to get a large box.- If you're also buying a rack because your car doesn't have a built-in rack, order it and install it before getting your roof box. Racks take some time to assemble and install the first time through and you don't want to be doing that in the REI parking lot.

Comments about Thule Ascent 1600 Roof Box:
With two kids, you always need a little more space. We bought this for the 2010 Subaru Outback and it fits perfectly on the built-in roof racks. Also had no problems with the hatchback opening since you can adjust it so the box does not hang over the end. Surprisingly roomy and felt pretty stable as we drove in the snowy Sierras.

Comments about Thule Ascent 1600 Roof Box:
I bought the Ascent 1600 last year. The connections to the rack rails were quick and easy to use, and the box generally does the job. However to get the box open, one has to put all of the torque on the small, flimsy key. When the box is fully loaded, this can become a serious problem. The key finally broke on me last month. I returned it and replaced it with a Yakima Skybox, which has a sturdy metal latch handle. I would definitely recommend the Yakima.

Comments about Thule Ascent 1600 Roof Box:
We couldn't decide between the Yakima and Thule at first, [...] Owning a Mini Clubman I wanted to go with the biggest cargo box that didn't have much of an overhang and still looked stylish. This box fit the bill. Super light. [...]. From the outside it doesn't look like it will fit a lot, but don't be deceived. We put 2 large suitcases and 2 duffle bags, all the boys toys and we still had some room. I like the fact that once you insert the key, it won't let you pull it out even while the box is open. This will prevent you from losing it. My family and I drove from Chicago to Florida nonstop. Approximately 2400 miles and it was solid. I kept the car at 70-75 mph, but at times I went up to 85mph and solid. My mileage went down 1-2 miles but no noise or shaking. This was especially true when we hit the hills in Tennessee.

Comments about Thule Ascent 1600 Roof Box:
My wife drives an F-350 and needed some place to put the baby's stroller. Not wanting to put a tunnel cover because we use the bed of the truck every weekend for different adventures, we put the Thule bed racks and the cargo box on the truck. We now have a place to put all the baby stuff and keep it clean and dry. We could even put our kayaks on the racks and have the bed of the truck for other things.

Comments about Thule Ascent 1600 Roof Box:
We drove from Massachusetts to The Florida Keys in snow, wind and heavy rain without a single glitch. Four thousand miles total in the trip. The Thule was easy to attach and everything stayed dry. No road noise and on side trips, with less overall weight in the van, there was no loss of gas mileage compared to no carrier. The vehicle we drove was a Toyota Sienna. Don't mess around, get a Thule and forget about it.
