Comments about MSR Lightning Ascent 30 Snowshoes:
I saw gear envy in the eyes of my fellow snowshoers when I produced these on a group outing last winter! As far as performance goes, I loved 'em. The toothy crampons and grippy frames had me climbing slopes where others with lesser shoes were slipping. The shoes are really easy to put on, even with heavy gloves on. The bindings stayed good and tight through several miles of slogging. The elevator bar thingy really, really helps when going up hill, though I found it a little hard to pop up with gloves on. I might monkey rig an easy to grip strap on it.
I got the 30s, thinking I might carry a heavy pack for winter travel some time. They are just too long for most day hiking I'll be doing. A couple of times I crossed them over and nearly fell. I'll exhange them for 25s, I think. Well, I hope this helps!

Comments about MSR Lightning Ascent 30 Snowshoes:
I'm 6'1" and 220 pounds with no gear. I have a set of Tubbs 36 mountaineers and was looking to down size a little bit for my backcountry outings. I was nervous about what I would loose in flotation going to a shoe the size of the lightnings. I did side by side tests in just about every condition possible and the tubbs got crushed in every category! I did loose a little flotation of course, but the agility and traction of the lightnings made up for it by far.
If you are a big guy that like extreme backcountry outings, THIS SHOE IS FOR YOU!!!

Comments about MSR Lightning Ascent 30 Snowshoes:
Whether going for a casual snowshoe on the flats or climbing granite mountain the winter, these are great snowshoes. I especially notice the quality when down climbing or traversing in them. The paint will chip off of them if you climb on mixed rock and ice slopes in them.
One cool thing is I sharpen the spikes with my dotco at work, they wear and grip like a huge pair of crampons yet keep you from going up to your eyeballs in snow when you cross drifts!
