After its initial break-in period you might notice your bicycle performing less responsively than the day you brought it home. Not to worry, this is typical of all new bicycles and simply reflects that cables have stretched or their housings have seated themselves into final position. To keep running at peak performance, all REI bicycles come with a FREE warranty tune-up, which should be accomplished between the first 100-200 miles of riding or after the first two months if you're accumulating miles less quickly. Contact your nearest REI bike shop for details and an appointment for this important service.

Comments about K2 ZED 1.0 Bike - 2008:
I use this bike to commute back and fourth, usually about 10 miles round trip when errands are involved, on hilly suburban streets. I also go on weekends to moderate mountain biking trails. The bike works well for both.
The only issue I noticed was with the gear system. Occasionally shifting is slow/difficult and in the higher gears (7/8) there is some slippage. These are far from major issues, but they are worth noting.
All in all a very good entry level bike, but if you believe you will be doing lots of shifting, consider upgrading to something a little higher quality in the drive train.

Comments about K2 ZED 1.0 Bike - 2008:
I bought this bike as an upgrade to a cheap, full suspension bike I bought at a big box retailer. I primarily have used it for my 4 mile commute to work, but also being a leader for a group of boy scouts that like mountain biking, I needed something that could stand up to some off roading. With the full suspension of my last bike, I was disappointed in the power loss experienced going up hills which lead me to get the hardtail this time around.
The one flaw I found in the bike, which caused me to give it 4/5 stars, was the seatpost. It bent after less than 20 miles of riding on local streets. On the plus side, REI replaced the seatpost for free and I haven't had the replacement post bend yet.
The brakes are very strong. I have not had brakes work this well on a bike before. Since I'm tall (6'3") I do have to make sure that I don't brake too hard and fly over the handlebars. The thumb shifters work well and loss of momentum when I have to shift going up hill is minimal. Much better than the grip shifters on my old bike. The weight and cost are hard to beat for an entry level hardtail.
If you're looking for a bike to pound the dirt with, you need to look somewhere else. If you need something to stay in shape, commute to work, and have the option of going off road, seriously look at the Zed 1.0
