Comments about REI French Press Mug:
I'm one of those campers who is way more pleasant if I have coffee and I'm annoyingly particular about the quality (instant isn't an option) and I'm also worried about space, therefore no percolator. I was thinking about doing the Nalgene bottle french press but I didn't really like the idea of a hot, uninsulated Nalgene bottle. So anyway, I ordered one of these to try it out. I used some Tim Horton Fine-ground, figuring that if anything was going to get through the sieve, this would. I boiled water and put 3 tablespoons of coffee in the cup and poured. Looking back, I would have put in 4, I like it strong. Anyway, I waited 5 minutes (should have waited 10) and plunged it down and poured it. I wasn't expecting as much as I got. It was plenty of coffee for two people. I was also surprised to notice no grounds while drinking, and only a little soot at the bottom of my cup. Better yet, it was easy to clean. I'd give it five stars, but I need to check durability to do that. I'll keep you posted. And, to you gram-crunchers out there, you can literally stuff a sock in it!

Comments about REI French Press Mug:
MY search for the perfect backpacking coffee system is over! This thing rocks. Put a couple tablespoons of coffee in the cup, heat your water, add water to cup, let steep for 3-4 minutes, depress plunger and drink. Very easy to use, easy to clean and makes GREAT COFFEE!! It says to use the medium ground coffee but I just use the regular ground folger's and there were no grounds at all in my coffee. Fairly lightweight (7 oz i think). I put my coffee in a ziplock bag with a measuring spoon and store it in the cup, which hangs from my backpack on a carabiner. Only problem is now everyone is bugging me to make them a cup while on the trail:)

Comments about REI French Press Mug:
I purchased this to make coffee in the office and it is great for that purpose. I wish it was stainless steel rather than plastic. I use the instant hot water on the water cooler and it works well. My advice is to start with a good brand of coffee, pour it into a mug immediately after steeping, and if you use milk (as I do), don't follow the instructions that say to add the milk, coffee and sugar before the water.

Comments about REI French Press Mug:
I must admit, I was not expecting much, especially given the price, but, having a coupon, I figured this would be a good start.
I have to say, i'm very pleased. One nice batch of coffee. coarse grinds from the grocery store grinders work just dandy in this press, with a minimum of silt. i've never had the plunger jam, and the whole thing cleans okay but not great. it does acquire seasoning over time, so stick with one type of coffee if you can.

Comments about REI French Press Mug:
It's simply a terrific little unit. A quick and easy two cups or so, depending on your cup. clean coffee coming out, only the tiniest trace of anything in the bottom of the cup the second time around, and that was so fine that it was hardly objectionable. pours nicely into a separate drinking vessel(which must be recommended as it keeps rocket-hot for a long time), and cleans VERY well.

I went on my first backpacking trip, and brought this along. My coffee came out perfect! If you need coffee as much as I do while camping, I highly recommend this item.

Comments about REI French Press Mug:
It's a little bulky, but you can always stuff something in it when packing. But you won't get better coffee when camping. I even used it at home for a couple weeks when my espresso machine broke down. French press coffee is a million times better than drip, let alone tea bags or instant. And this makes enough for 2 in a few minutes. Just pour boiling water over grounds, let sit 5 minutes, then press the plunger down and you're done! Make sure you get coarse ground coffee to avoid any sludge.

Comments about REI French Press Mug:
Was looking for a simple way to get a coffee fix while camping- this does the trick nicely. System is lightweight although the mug is bit bulky. In terms of appearance, it is not as sleek as some of the stainless steel versions out there but the price is better and it makes a good cup of coffee.
I usually get my coffee from Peet's, they'll grind it a bit coarser for french press. But even with standard grinds I have not been getting grounds in the brew, with the exception of a bit of sediment at the bottom of the mug. The capacity is good, yielding about 2 cups at a time. Since it only takes few minutes to brew, you can make coffee for a few people in a reasonable amount of time.
