Comments about Suunto Core Multifunction Watch - Light Black:
This watch isn't really worth the money. Case is plastic, the bezel feels really cheap. I kept it initially because it had the functions I wanted and works well...as long as you have new batteries at hand. Unfortunately, the it eats batteries--one battery every every 1.5 months. That was with all sounds turned off and rarely using the compass. The worst of it is that the low battery indicator did not work. I'd just wake up in the morning and find the watch dead. This is very spooky for someone who spends a lot of time in the backcountry and relies on the instruments to identify your location.[...]

Comments about Suunto Core Multifunction Watch - Light Black:
For its size and weight, it's a comfortable watch, and the altimeter is quite accurate. I also like the log functions of the altimeter, where I can keep track of net elevation gain/loss. Now for the downside: The display is hard to read in the dark because the light is so dim. The battery went dead after just a couple of months, with no indication on the battery meter that anything was amiss. The strap pin came out on the first run I took it on and I had to dig the watch out of a thicket. Suunto sent another pin, but it was a hassle. Like all Suuntos, the compass has problems in the southern hemisphere. But the clincher, and why I returned it, is because the display developed lines that rendered it unreadable. After seeing the other reviews, it seems my complaints are fairly common. [...]So, buyer beware.

Comments about Suunto Core Multifunction Watch - Light Black:
For those with a Core that has battery problems.....Suunto initiated a recall on it's early units that would eat batteries....you might want to look into it if you have an old Core. I think they replaced them free of charge. Give Suunto a call. I've had a core for over a year and its still going on the original battery. Most of that is daily use, but there have been 4 weeks of backcountry use mixed in there....all on the original battery.
I'm kind of a tech geek and this is my 6th ABC watch and it easily beats my Protrek, Observer, Vector, Highgear, and Timex. It's the most intuitive to use and the automatic switching between altimeter and barometer mode actually works quite well.

Comments about Suunto Core Multifunction Watch - Light Black:
Easy to read (before problems occurred), as accurate as other altimeters/compasses/thermometers that I've used.I wish it were easier to determine current rate of ascent/descent. The 'light' is adequate but still pretty dim. After 10 days usage the LCD started to malfunction, leaving lines out of the display. Within 2 weeks the display is barely readable. This 'feature' doesn't appear to be related to a poor battery, but rather to poor quality control. I've had [$] watches that lasted 10 years without LCD issues - this is pathetic.

Comments about Suunto Core Multifunction Watch - Light Black:
This watch is cool. It looks good and has the functions that matter. Like all other altimeter/ barameters it does require periodic calibration. I find its best uses are time, sunrise/ sunset, altimeter, timer, dual time, and compass. Get you one.

Comments about Suunto Core Multifunction Watch - Light Black:
After reading many of the reviews of this watch, I proceeded with the purchase hesitantly. Once I received the watch I wore it none stop for two weeks. In that time I wore it to bed, in the pool, in the gym, on my runs, and in the shower. My goal was to see if the watch could handle my daily grind. The watch had big shoes to fill so to speak. I had a Casio pathfinder PAG50, which was 7 years old and just started to malfunction. I loved my Casio, it had many pros but the one con was that it was big and it wasn’t very stylish. I called it my indestructible watch cause I wore it doing everything and anything physical it never gave me a problem. So after wearing my Suunto Core White Black I have to admit that the trade-off of solar for style was a far one. I love the watch so far. I can wear it to work with a suit, out on the town on a casual night, or to the gym. I feel like it is a quality watch and the feature set is awesome. It offers some features that I wish was on the Casio but its really a trade-off, both are very well balanced watches. So to sum it up, I would buy another Suunto. I know it’s still premature since most started having problems after 8 months but so far so good. If I starting having problems REI will take back the watch and I’ll just get another Casio.

Comments about Suunto Core Multifunction Watch - Light Black:
This watch was a huge disappointment. The only function that worked consistently was the time function. Everything else was abysmal; compass regularly pointed in the wrong direction, thermometer was always off (even when not attached to my wrist), altimeter was inaccurate even after repeated calibration and the storm warning alarm would go off constantly. I took this watch back after a few weeks. Definitely do not buy this watch,

Comments about Suunto Core Multifunction Watch - Light Black:
I have enjoyed this watch from the start. Of all the watches I have used or owned including Highgear, Timex, and Casio, the Core is the most accurate. The positive face is also the brightest and easiest to read. The battery that came with the watch didn't last long but the new Duracell I installed is doing just fine. I changed the original watchband with the Core Light Black watchband and like it better in terms of comfort and looks. The aluminum bezel painted black does rattle just a little but it is not very noticable. The auto function for altitude and barometer is an outstanding feature as is the sunrise and sunset data. Overall, I'm going to keep the watch because I enjoy its functions and accuracy.

Comments about Suunto Core Multifunction Watch - Light Black:
This watch has had a lot of bad press, mainly due to this being Suunto's first crack at having one of their watches made in china. It does feel cheap, but it's light and has a mineral crystal lens.
In the one year of ownership, this watch has been scuba diving to 75 feet (meter quits at 39', but it didn't implode, leak or have any other depth related problems, the bezel fell of that trip while donning gear) tons of dirt biking, elk hunting, working on cars, trucks, boats, and planes, snorkeling, mountian biking, and of course, backpacking/hiking. IF this watch had a depth meter to 150', it would be perfect but Suunto will never do that due to taking business away from their dive line.
Despite all the bad press on this rig, I bought it anyway because of all of the features and took my chances. I'm glad I did. Like I said, the bezel fell off and you have to send it back to Suunto to get it fixed, but they have a bomber warrranty. Make sure to get a s/n that starts with "8" and you'll be fine.
I've replaced the battery twice in the 12 months I've owned it, but they're cheap and easy to do yourself. If you want to 'go green' get a transformer/pathfinder but you'll have to wipe your carbon footprint twice to get that big rechargeable battery in check. My low battery warning does work, but on it's own accord. The first time the battery died, the warning came on once and went away. The watch fully died a few days later with no other warning. 6 months later while elk hunting, I kept the watch in my tent pocket so I could hear the alarm and the cold caused the warning to come on again. I changed the battery that day and no biggie. I use the altimeter and barometer constantly, as in every day, work or play. As much as I use the features of this rig, I'm actually impressed the battery lasts as long as it does.
If you've made it this far to researching this watch, get it. You obviously want one. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Comments about Suunto Core Multifunction Watch - Light Black:
Having read some of the other comments that were a bit negative I spent a lot of time researching this watch. I ended up getting the all black version last month and have been really happy. I went into the purchase knowing that I would probably have to calibrate the compass and alti/baro often. I use a Silva ranger for my detailed and accurate land navigation however the digital compass in the Core is a handy reference while moving on trail. It has a bearing lock but I don't use it too much. The barometer has been useful and is accurate once set for your local. The altimeter is also pretty accurate too but keep in mind that for true elevation readings one must set the reference altitude at the beginning of a trip or you can use the watch to just monitor elevation gained and lost. The depth meter also is a cool function and seems to work well with light snorkeling and swimming both in fresh and salt water. In time mode you get dual time and sunrise/sunsets for your locality in addition to timer, stopwatch, and a decently loud alarm with snooze. No water has gotten inside, and I'm not worried about when I have to change the battery as I have done it before on other Suunto watches. I understand that people have had to replace the battery more frequently but remember that its constantly doing more than just your average timepiece. The compass and backlight are both energy hungry features and it's constantly taking barometric and temperature readings.Overall I believe that the Core is now a solid product and a useful addition to an outdoors-man's toolkit.
