A must-have item
This a wonderful product for those winter hikes and backpacking trips. Recently did a backpacking trip, where overnight lows dipped to around 9 degrees F. These were great for keeping my hands warm, but I found a new use for them, too. As I was only carrying a 20 degree bag and pad, it was a little chilly sleeping in my hammock. I popped 2 of these in the foot of my sleeping bag and stayed toasty warm all night. You can also set your Nalgene one one of these before you go to bed, and it can help keep your water from freezing solid. For me, this was much better than putting a bottle of 32 degree water in my bag next to my skin.
one of 10 essentials for winter
I bring these camping - in any season. I camp with a small child and these were great for the kids. I don't buy the ones for feet -- the hand ones work just fine for the feet -- just toss them in your shoe and walk on it or place one between a layer of socks. If it gets too cold I will wear a sock, then put the warmer on my foot/toes and put on another pair of socks. Helps keep the warmer in place. Great to use in the foot of your sleeping bag or if you're doing work in the cold, have one warming up your extra set of gloves.
Worth their weight in gold
Simply stated... this product is probably the only reason why I still have fingers after encountering subzero temps on a winter hike of Mt Elbert with bone chilling winds and gloves that were not up to the task. This product definitely saved me from frostbite.
What a lifesaver!
These were the only thing that got me through three months of selling Girls Scout cookies in snowdrifts! I spent every weekend in front of our local banks, etc., and it seemed to snow constantly last year, but these little wonders kept me going. That little bit of magic is worth every penny!
They're super
These things last so long, you'll forget about them multiple times and it'll probably be tomorrow by the time they cool off completely. However I have a few packs that are now over a year old and they don't seem to last nearly as long, so it seems best to use them within a few months of getting them. They also get really hot, given the right conditions. (The right amount of air exposure+being insulated from direct cold sucking the heat out of them.. usually these conditions can be found in your pocket.) The package warns that they can burn skin if you leave them there (like fall asleep with them) but I have never had them get this hot. They get just hot enough that I'm like "wow, this is really hot" but it isn't yet painful. It's so nice to have one of these in your pocket on a cold day to warm your hands whenever you need. It's like a friendly pet mouse, except it doesn't die. Well, it does.. but not because you accidentally sat on it. It can totally handle that.
they work well!
I've used these specific ones for a couple years. They're small and lightweight. As such they don't get as hot as their bigger brothers or last as long. They do a great job at keeping you warm though! They work best in a smaller/confined pocket. I've had them stay warm for up to 10hours in my pocket! One or two in a sleeping bag also had an incredible amount of warmth to your sleep!
Terrible!
These did not work at all! I bought a pack of these to take on a trip to the Alps, and had the same result from each pair. After following the instructions and just "exposing to air" they barely got warm. After about 30 minutes they stopped producing any heat at all. Do not buy.
Don't Work
These didn't work for me at all. I got a whole slew of hand warmers, toe warmers, insole warmers, and mega body warmers, and NONE of them worked. We just did a trip up in the Smokies in -5°F weather and two days later, my toes are still numb. Thanks guys... Some of my friends had competing products and those did work. Those you had to shake before using. These you simply expose to the air to activate as per the instructions on the packaging. (I tried shaking them, preheating them to jump-start them by putting them next to my stove fire, putting them directly in my gloves, letting them sit out exposed in the air for an hour or two, and none of these things got them started up.) Looking at the reviews for this product as well as talking to others who've used/sell these products, it looks like they usually do work as advertised, but if you're gonna order these, do yourself a favor and test these out before taking them out in the cold where your body parts depend upon them working properly. Also, I'd suggest getting clothing that insulates well even without warmers. Don't depend upon these things to be one of your main sources of well-being. Even if they do work, what if you run out? Consider these to be bonus, not the main deal. I just got off the phone with the manufacturer who's sending me out some more samples to try out. I suggested the "bad batch" theory and they said they don't have bad batches. I used these within a few days of buying them from REI and the validity date on the back of the package (expiration date) is 2-3 years from now so they should still be good. Some were made in the USA and some in Japan. Thus these were all from different batches in different factories and they all still didn't work. Plus feeling the warmers themselves, they are still soft and bendy, not hard as if they had been used. If these things worked properly, I'm sure they'd be great. Given that they didn't for me when I really needed them to, I simply can't recommend them for times when you really need them. I depend upon my gear being reliable and effective. Don't you? These sorts of results I find completely unacceptable. I hope this company gets this straightened out.
Sweet invention
I have tried these a few years ago when I was living in NM. But I saw these and got some. I'm glad I did. In 20 degree nights, one of these in my feet area of my sleeping bag helped warm up my legs nicely. I even would put one in a pocket sometimes... near my femoral artery to help get my blood warm. These exponentially add warmth to any sleeping bag or blanket. They're light and easy to carry a lot of them. Oh yeah they're great at warming hands too!
Hand Warmers
The warmers work pretty good. I would recommend you start them a little before you want to use them. It takes a while for them to heat up. We used them snowshoeing. After we were done I left them in the gloves. When we left the house we were visiting they were very warm. So getting them going earlier would be my recommendation.
