Comments about Novara Ponderosa 24'' Bike:
I looked at almost every 24" wheel MTB out there for my son's 8th birthday. The "Pondo 24" had the nicest parts spec and I appreciated the mixed-use tires and overall light weight as well as the understated paint job. The bike does have some quality control issues: paint was scratched when I picked it up; head tube badge is applied off to the side; and most significantly chainline issues. [...]and apparently the fix for the chainline was a couple of spacers behind the cassette. Nothing wrong with that, but as a 24" wheel MTB with short chainstays, it still ends up requiring the front derailleur to be trimmed after shifting just 2 cogs in the rear. What this means to my 8-year old, who's working hard to learn proper shifting, is lots of extra fiddling and funny noises coming from the front derailleur. In addition, the SRAM 3.0 rear derailleur projects way out to the side of the bike when on the smaller cogs, and I suspect the first of many bent/broken derailleur hangers is not far away. The handlebar position is too high and exacerbated by the riser bars, and a large conical spacer atop the headset makes it impossible to lower the stem all the way. [...].Despite all of my nitpicks: my son loves it, we had a blast riding the Youngs Lake trail last week and he's well on his way to a love of mountain biking. It's a reasonable deal at the current sale price.
