Falling is BAD: Ice & Snow Safety Balanc
A dear friend with MS shared a WONDERFUL tip. She keeps a set of YakTrax on a pair of shoes (in her case – slip on boots for ease of application) in her car so that when she arrives at a client's home, she can safely walk in and out. This is brilliant! From another friend: I finally got a chance to use those slip-on crampons yesterday at Sugarbowl. They were great! Walking in an icy and snowy parking lot is usually the most dangerous part of a ski day. I slipped in the parking lot on the way to cross country ski. I landed on my hip on the hard pavement. I've been a YakTrax fan ever since. Note about sizing – Order a size larger than you think so you can more easily put them on your heavy walking shoes/boots.
Broke the first time out
I bought a set for a decently intense eight mile hike over step terrain with a mixture of packed snow, loose snow, and ice. They kept slipping forwards and towards my instep from the very start of the trip, which meant a stop every half mile to readjust. At about four miles in, one of them broke, and then the second one broke two miles later. My companion had exactly the same issues. They performed alright while they were intact, so they might be alright for very light use on flat ground. If you wanted something for traction while occasionally shoveling your driveway, for example, they would probably work, but don't expect to walk any distance on them.
Worked great for the short time
I had a hard time getting them on my gym shoes. Next time I will go with a larger size. They worked great when the sidewalks were icy and I was attempting to walk my dog. First season and then one of the rubber sides broke. I will still buy another set, but if they break then I give up. The steel coils work wonderfully, but I hope the manufacturer can do something about the rubber and not having them break so early. The winter season has begun about 2 months ago. Eventually I'll buy another set for next season. If they don't work out the problems of the rubber breaking than it's a waste of good hard-earned money!
Good while they last
I bought the YakTracx Pros several years ago before a winter photo trip to Yellowstone but didn't need them at the time. This past winter I used them for another photo trip which required hiking for about an hour and then standing around for several hours on packed snow. I did this for two days and at the end of the second day discovered that one of the rubber "bands" inside the steel coils had broken. The Yaktrax worked well on the packed snow providing good traction without making the hiking difficult. But I was disappointed that they didn't last very long under what I considered to be relatively mild use. I need to find something else before my next winter photo trip.
Awesome Product
I've had great luck with this product so far. They have been flawless for me when used on packed snow, some light ice, and relatively flat terrain. If the terrain starts to get technical, the YakTrax start to slip around a lot. I've used them in a few places where I might have normally used crampons but didn't want to carry the extra weight. They are obviously no comparison to good crampons, but for flat terrain the YakTrax stick like glue. And they stay on my shoes much more reliably than the MicroSpikes I was using previously. Best of all they are extremely lightweight and compact down very small (with no sharp spikes), so they can be easily stuffed into a pack.
Did not hold up on a 3 mile hike
Bought 2 pairs to hike around Moab in snow and ice. Hiked Fisher Towers 3 miles out and back. Both pairs blew out on the hike back. I returned both pairs that failed. I purchased Yaktrax ICEtrekkers Diamond Grip Traction System and used them all over NW Montana. If you're going to be hiking and want grip to last go with the Diamond Grip version. The salesperson at REI said they've seen many pairs of the Pro version fail and recommended the Diamond version. If you're looking for just something to get around on sidewalks/streets that are iced, the Pro version might be okay, in my experience, that's about all they'd be good for.
Yaktrax Pro
I bought the yaktrax pro primarily for running during the winter months in Maine. I average about 100 miles/month and they were wasted by Feb. The rubber broke and the metal springs were in bad shape before that. Will not hold up. I also bought a pair to leave on my boots for walking the dog during the winter months. These are still working but the springs have already started breaking. They might make it through the season. Just walking? Really? The bottom line is light use may get them through a proper winter if you walk lightly and not often. I would pick something else. Hope this helps.
no problems with a full week of use
These worked for a full week of use in Rocky Mtn National Park without incident, without failure, without breaking. I can see that the weak link of this product is the fact that the steel springs that grip the ice are connected by rubber bands...these potentially could break, but never did during my week of ice hiking in Mid October. They worked great, as my g/f and I almost ran past people falling down on the ice covering the trails in the park. Just take care that the rubber connectors are not exposed on the bottom of your boots. They are still fully intact and functional. I plan to use them shoveling snow this winter.
AVOID Yaktrax
I would strongly advise NOT purchasing this system or any from Yaktrax. My wife used a pair of Pros one time for a short hike this past winter. One of the units failed (the rubber severed) during the hike. I wrote to Yaktrax requesting a replacement and sent the unit back with the request (per their warranty process). 5 months later and I have heard nothing from them despite having written them a few times. Not even the courtesy to reply declining the request. From my perspective they have stolen our hard earned money. Strongly recommend purchasing other brands and avoiding Yaktrax.
Broke after 2 weeks
I give these two stars since it was only 2 weeks ago I started using them. I walked my dog on icy paths a couple times a day, and loved the traction. Then today, two of the rubber connectors snapped. I’m so disappointed.
