Comments about Rossignol BC Adjustable Poles:
My wife and I went to Colorado in Dec 2009 and did some cross country skiing. She liked it and wanted to get some of our own gear. In Colorado, the snow was deep and the poles we rented did not adjust which presented a problem a time or two when we came across some deep snow.
These poles were on clearance at a good and decent price - assuming they would hold up. I read the reviews and noticed the comment about them collapsing. That concerned me since I know this could be an issue with the type of skiing we planned to do...but I ordered them anyway thinking the others were defects and maybe mine would not collapse.
I checked the poles when they came...I could not get them to collapse...must be a defect. We headed out to the "back country" to ski in the woods...the first hill we went up...one of my poles collapsed! Darn it...second hill...collapsed. Now I was having a few regrets wishing I had not bought these and thinking now what? Then I thought, I have to make these work so they do not collapse - the company would not make them if they collapsed so easily!! I looked at the pole and then the latch that is used to adjust the pole thinking there has to be a way! Sure enough, as you lock the latch, it compresses around the pole -- so if the latch was not tight enough, there would not be enough friction to hold the poles together without collapsing when your body weight is applied (like when you're going up a hill).
The latch has a split down the middle of it...with a nut and bolt holding it around the shaft...if you tighten the bolt it causes that split to be compressed together -- thereby creating more friction. The more friction, the less likely it will collapse.
I collapsed the pole, used my car key to tighten the screw...expanded the pole...locked down the latch...continued...no more collapsing pole -- problem solved.
The next day we were skiing the back 9 at a local golf course...my wife's pole collapsed while going up a hill. Again, I used my car key to tighten the screw on each latch...her pole did not collapse again.
Based on how the other adjustable poles work, I would imagine they all are capable of collapsing, if the latch does not create enough friction around the shaft.
Once you tighten that screw down, the poles work great. If you do not, they will collapse at some point!
I have a few main points that I love about the poles.
1 - they work great in varying depths of snow (since they are adjustable).
2 - they come with two baskets -- depending on the type of skiing (groomed trails or backcountry).
3 - I have two sets and do not have to figure out which set is hers vs mine - I pick up a set and adjust them to my height.
The con
1 - My wife felt the handle was not very comfortable. I am not sure why she feels this way about them. She might be looking for something more in line with a downhill ski pole. Just not sure. Personally, I did not find any issue with them...they seem like they are like all other XC poles.
Undetermined Con or Pro
1 - I do not have enough experience with both baskets yet, but they seem like they are a little flimsy. The baskets are a 'soft' plastic - they flex a good bit thereby giving them the feel of being flimsy - like they will not hold up. At the same time, they are not the hard plastic type...so they are less likely to break easily.
Right now, I am unsure if the baskets will hold up or not - time will tell.
I do not have any plans on returning these poles - they work great -- once you tighten that screw/latch down.

if you apply any weight to these poles they collapse ... this is after tightening them securely over and over again. very frustrating

Comments about Rossignol BC Adjustable Poles:
This is a terrible produt. Both my wife and I purchased these, and both of us thought these were horribly made. They collapse under any kind of pressure. We are returning them asap for regular poles. What a dissapointment! They are not dependable in the backcountry like they claim, and we would've been better off without them!

Comments about Rossignol BC Adjustable Poles:
These were a good price for adjustable poles, so I thought I would try them out. Like other reviewers, I found that they collapse under pressure too easily even after I tightened up the locking mechanism. They also seemed a little flexy compared to the cheap Swix poles I'd been using. On the plus side, the screw on baskets make changing the baskets easy. I'm returning these.

Comments about Rossignol BC Adjustable Poles:
These are sweet BC adjustable Poles. 1st thing you HAVE to do is tighten the screw on the adjuster with a flathead as tight as you can get it. Then the poles will never give way. Looks like it was user error for the people that complained about this product...poor them...

Comments about Rossignol BC Adjustable Poles:
Some reviewers claim that adjusting the screw will overcome its collapsing. It did not with my BD gift. Very disappointed REI would offer these - tarnishes your reputation.

Comments about Rossignol BC Adjustable Poles:
I had troubles with collapsing poles until I analyzed the tensioning and determined that the screw on the tightening lock could be tightened adding pressure to the lock and making a great deal of difference in how well they work. For something like that some documentation would have been REAAAAAALLLY useful!!!

Comments about Rossignol BC Adjustable Poles:
I don't know why the other reviewers had issues with these poles. I used mine all last season through an awesome Montana winter (skied maybe 24 times) and loved them. I have never had a problem adjusting them. They have never collapsed on me, even when I use them to pull myself up out of the snow.
