I received this book as a gift for my birthday last summer and I've been pleasantly surprised with how much I've enjoyed it. Most guide books (and online sites) seem to try to do too much and often leave important things--like driving directions and off-trail navigation--to chance. Not so with this one. The writing is very crisp, accurate and the author has obviously done all the hikes he writes about.

The fact I'm writing this review in the off-season is due to the fact I picked up the book and started reading the chapters for fun. Many of the chapters read more like stories while still retaining all the important information. (Additional info and historical info is a nice touch). I'm looking forward to trying more hikes come spring. I had a chance to do two of the hikes last autumn--Fools' Peak and Mount Zirkel--and was impressed by the maps and writing for these off-trail adventures (good GPS info too).

The only thing to note: experienced hikers will probably have done some of the classic hikes: Longs, Elbert and the Boulder Peaks to name a few. But some of the others such as Golden Horn and the Citadel look great!

An excellent book for newbies and experienced hikers and scramblers alike.

I love Colorado hiking, but I've always had issues with the older guidebooks. Many lacked accurate directions or left out important directions. Same for online sites--you never knew what you'd get!

I received this book as a gift last summer and was pleasantly surprised at both the hike selection and the attention to detail. In fact, I'm writing this review as I read the book "out of season" because much of the book reads more like a narrative than a dry, old guide book. I was able to try two of the peaks I didn't know about--Fools' Peak and Mount Zirkel--and found the write ups, directions and maps to be excellent (and fun to read). The GPS coordinates were also very helpful, especially on my off-trail adventure to Fools' Peak.

I look forward to trying some of the other great hikes in the book this spring. One thing to note: some experienced hikers will have done several of the "classic" hikes: the Boulder Mountains, Longs Peak and Mount Elbert for example. Still, as a collection of the best summit hikes, it's a fantastic selection and very well-written. And unlike other guides, it's obvious the author has done all the hikes in the book.

Highly recommended for hikers and scramblers alike.
