Bought for 2 month trip through South America. Also use for backpacking at home in Alaska. The best part is the easy access to any part of this pack - no more unpacking to find one thing! Stands up to airplane travel, Peruvian bus rides, throwing across streams, Patagonian winds, wet ferry trips. Convenient for travel in cities, tough enough for trekking. Comfortable for weeks and even months at a time. The reason I chose this pack was because I am a short female but women's packs don't fit my broad shoulders and men's packs don't put weight on my hips. This pack was one of the few adjustable enough to fit my specific body type.
This pack does it's job, well. Only two "cons" that I can think of after a few seasons using this pack. 1)Not waterproof. (Pack cover solves this.. =\ ) 2)Smallish sleeping bag compartment. i.e. A +20 degree bag will completely fill the compartment, even in it's stuff-sack. (A nylon divider is all that "keeps" this compartment from the rest of your pack. It is removable..allowing for more space.)
Love this pack! Just finished hiking the 42 Black Forest Trail in PA and I honestly couldn't have been happier. The Response Active Fit Suspension works like a charm. I could really feel the difference of the pivot when compared to my old Kelty pack. I love the spacious pockets and the layout of the pack. I like to think of myself as a minimalist since I try to only bring what I need, but I'll admit that I way over packed on this trip due to vast amount of space and the huge side pockets. When they say it 50 pounds feel like nothing...I can testify that at least 45 pounds feels like nothing! Highly recommended!
I use this pack for winter overnights and longer trips during better weather in the White Mtns. As an emergency responder, I tend to over-prepare and over-pack. "Better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it" is the mantra I'm accustomed to, but I am getting better. This pack has allowed me to pack heavy and accomplish my goals with comfort and stability. One thing I wish it had was a removable top compartment like the Palisades Model, but I plan to modify this pack to do that, and it won't take much. I look forward to lighter and longer trips, but for now this pack is exactly what I need and it will only get better.
I have a very sensitive and bad back. After piecing together an XS Baltoro with small shoulder straps and medium hip belt, I created the perfect fit. Thanks to REI for puting up with me and scavaging all the different size pieces to create a custom pack. My ultimate goal was to get that Gregory lumbar pad exactly where I needed it (in the small of my back), with a heavy/full load. If you need lumbar support when driving or sitting in certain situations, Gregory has the lumbar solution. I have owned mmy backppack 2 years now and it has always been comfortable. I never think about about the pack when hiking. If there is an issue, its either a wrinkle in my shirt or a strap in the wrong place or miss adjusted. I generally load up the Baltoro with about 40 lbs. Of all the gear I own, this pack is the only one I can give 5 stars whithout hesitation.
I tend to pack a little heavy on my 3 and four day trips. I switched from the Gregory Z55 because anything over 30lbs with it became uncomfortable. This pack holds weight very well. Just for kicks i loaded it to 50lbs. and it handled it with ease. The waste belts are beefy and minimize those uncomfortable pressure points. It has ample storage and a pretty nice dual access to the main compartment. The pack itself would be equally nice on light one or two day trips. Gregory makes an awesome pack. So if you think you might want to creep into the 35-50lb range this pack is the way to go NO QUESTIONS ASKED! I LOVE IT. I'm 6'1, 162lbs., pack size- L
I use it for backpacking and find it to be the best backpack I have owned. (This is number 4.) The only thing I wish it had was more gismos on the outside of the pack where you can stuff or hang things to. I had to be creative in hanging stuff on the outside of the pack. I would not concur with the statement made by the backpacker in review of April '08 that it ''...makes 50 pounds feel downright feathery.'' Fifty pounds, and even less weight, will never be feathery to me. The mesh zipper pockets on the belt are pretty much useless. Otherwise, a very good backpack, with great support and comfort.
Backpacker says this pack makes 50lbs feel feathery. I say it makes 70 tolerable. We had a member of our party fall hard and get a concussion and I had to double pack for a couple of miles. Though it wasn't the preferred method, the Baltoro held up to the abuse and was moderately comfortable even though it was very, very over packed. I was super pleased at the padding, and find the extra weight that it adds worth it. I also found the durability to be encouraging, it has held up to a lot of encounters with cacti. I haven't been in the rain with it yet so I cannot attest to the waterproofness but I am certainly pleased with this pack thus far.
This is one of the best packs i have ever bought and after three years it barely has any signs of wear. I carry a canoe with it and it excellently pads my shoulders from the weight of the boat. Tons of access to the main compartment and the perfect amount of exterior pockets make it a great trekking backpack which can hold all your gear without a problem. The waist belt is extremely well padded and has extra zippered pockets where you can stash your little trinkets. The pack also has a multitude of places to clip carabiners on to if needed. Overall, a very comfortable carrier which makes a heavy load easily bearable. Well worth the price!!
I bought this pack for a 74 mile hiking/camping trip I recently went on in North England carrying a load of about 40 lbs and this pack performed extremely well. It is very comfortable and the extra padding is great for long hikes. The ease of access to the main pack through the front loader was very helpful and the water bottle pouch was very handy also. The two side pockets on the hip belt are small if you need to use it for larger items but it was perfect for my small camera and compass. Hands down this is the best pack I have ever owned and I thank the REI employee who helped me select this extraordinary pack.
