Comments about REI Adventure Dog Tent:

Products was unique, in that I could not find a dog tent anywhere else.

Here is what needs to be improved:

    1) Secure front door. Currently can only be clipped shut at bottom corner ends. Dog can easily walk out of side door. Yes it has hole to leash pet, but not practical for multiple dogs. They will get tangled up in the night. Cure: Make front door with zipper.

    2) Completely enclose the floor. Currently half the floor is only clipped in at front corners. Not practical for camping in the out back. Small animals will search for cover in the tent, which in turn, riles up the dogs. Cure: Floor should close secure with sipper or sewn into tent walls.

    3) No rain fly. Not good for rain or lots of moisture. The inside becomes wet with built in moisture. Cure: Add detachable rain fly.

Tent seems best suited for car camping.

Comments about REI Adventure Dog Tent:

If it doesn't rain, this is a great product for the price. What's frustrating about it is that the design is basically a rain-scoop. The vestibule hardly covers the door opening. We like to leave the door open so she can relieve herself at night (rain or not). also, I don't think the material is fully waterproof. The main fly should be. I'd spend extra $ for these enhancements in future designs.

Comments about REI Adventure Dog Tent:

We took our crate trained dog camping and decided to leave the crate at home so as not to rip the bottom of the tent. After a camping trip with her hogging the bed and running circles in the tent at 7am, my girlfriend found the dog tent [...]. We were a bit unsure and had to work with her at home before the next camping trip to get her comfortable with it, but she got used to it pretty quickly. It fits in our tent next to the airbed and when we go in the big tent at night, she goes right into hers and goes to bed. The only con would be that it doesnt "secure" the dog in well. The front flap and front sides open up enough that she can get out when she wants. Maybe some velcro or something to secure it closed will help. Also, there is only 1 side window, so the tent has to be set up on the right side if you want to check on the dog without opening the flap to peek in, windows on both sides would have been nice. [...] Overall though, it was GREAT! It will come with us on future road trips because it is so easy and compact...and most importantly, our dog loves it!

Our dog was an indoor dog until we got this tent for our deck on our lakeside property. He loves to sleep out at night and watch the moon over the lake.

He won't even come inside in winter now!

Excellent product except he has worn out the poles with a year of daily use. Fabric is as new!

Comments about REI Adventure Dog Tent:

Well after doing much research looking for a tent that I can bring backpacking for my dog, this was the best thing that I found for the money. I do think it's a great tent for the dog but the gromments do not stay on the tent. The first one that I got I used about 5 times and one of the gromments came out, so I returned it and got a second one. The second one I used once and yet anther gromment came out. I have not yet found a way to prevent this from happening but I am thinking maybe duct tape, but we will see.

I still gave this tent 4 stars because how well it preforms. I have a short haired lab, pitt, boxer, something, something mix and he does get cold when the weather is chilly out. To help him out, I did make a fleece bed for him and I put a small ccf pad under the bed when it's really cold out. So far as I can tell when he is in the tent, even when it's cold out, he is fairly warm. It takes about 10 mins for the tent to warm up from his body heat, and it will warm up any where from 5 to 10 degrees from the outside temp. When it is cold, I will also put a poncho over top to try to hold in some more heat. Also when it is raining or when it is buggy, it's nice that he can get out of the weather and the bugs and get into some shelter. The entire setup is light enough that I do make him carry the tent in his palisades ruff wear pack and I do carry the poles which doesn't add much to my pack. If he wants it, he has to carry it, no free rides. There is a spot in the back of the tent that allows you to steak a leash to the ground for some dogs, that I personally don't use one because he likes to run a perimeter of camp between 4am and 5am. I am not willing to get out of my hammock that early so I let him do his "job". But if my dog needed to be on a leash, that is a great little feature. To set the tent, is very quick and easy and breaking it down is just as easy and quick.

Some cons, I am more of a stealth camper and I camp in a dark colored hammock, so I would like to see this tent come in some darker colors for stealth campers, but that is another reason for the poncho over top. I would also like to see this come in a little bit of a smaller size for smaller dogs, my dog is about 60lbs and there is room for another 2 dogs to lay down in it. So a bit smaller of a size would save a little bit of weight and pack size. And lastly, I would like to see the bottom be sealed for wet weather. You just have to be aware of where you place it if it is raining.

REI is great at returns so I'm not harping on the gromment thing but maybe they should try to find some gromments with a wider outside to hold the material. Other than that, yes I would purchase this tent again. Considering how much my dog loves it in the backcountry.

When breaking down the tent, the grommet for the
cross member pole ripped out of the sleeve.
My dogs weren't interested and personally, would
have been better off having a box type kennel.
It's a real cute product though and I just may
        have had bad luck.

Comments about REI Adventure Dog Tent:

Before I get to the Dog use write-up, let me state, that on my lase hiking trip to Luray with a couple of friends, my friends only brought poncho's and a mesquito net since the weather was supposed to be hot, sunny, and dry- famous last words. Of course the first night out there was a torrential downpour for a couple of hours. One of my friends will now attest that these Dog tents work great for Humans- she actually took refuge in the tent, much to my Dog's dismay- Dog still not speaking to Human.

Now for the Dog side of things; I have two White German Shephards who hike with me all the time- they each have their own REI Adventure tent; and they each carry their own tent in their own Mountain Smith Dog pack- Medium size [see my Dog pack review from LandRSea]. We have used these Dog tents in mountain Winter weather and in Spring, Summer, and Fall. The tents work fine. They are easy to put up and take down, and dirt shakes right out of them.

Not so grate things: There is an opening in the rear corner of the tent where you are supposed to run the Dog lead through. The idea is, you stake the lead somewhere out behind the tent, run the lead through the opening, and hook the doggie inside the tent- and so the story goes, the doggie sleeps and dreams of chasing squirrels until you wake the doggie up in the morning. Unfortunately, at least for my mutts, they like to get up and get out of their tent throughout the night. One of my Shephards (Taz) likes to run around when he comes out. I should mention here that the tent door is just a flap with no zipper. The door had two plastic clips at the bottom corners that hook in to each corner pole- thus the door is open at the sides. The door essentially just keeps the weather out not the Dog in. This is problemmatic since the Dog lead is run through the small openning in the rear of the tent. We have gone through two tents with Taz (the Shephard that likes to run around). My next ploy is to stake him out in front of the tent allowing him to enter and exit from the door flap, thus, Taz will not have to take the tent with him when he decides to exit and run around.

The tent poles are the fiberglass type so they break Vs bend. Self explanatory problem...

Overall, I will keep using the tents, but probably only when weather is bad.

Comments about REI Adventure Dog Tent:

We took this out on a camping trip, right after we got it. We should have let our dogs get used to it first, but we were so excited we had to try it out. Having two dogs that are always together, they insisted that they share one -- which was difficult. And at night, they did not want to stay in there, and kept on coming out of the side of the door. We did not get any sleep until they settled to stay in the trunk of the SUV instead.

          Suggestions:

-- Make it similar to the NEMO Morpho AR, (which we currently own and LOVE!) so that all you have to do is to blow it up, and it's ready for use.

-- Definitely the door!! Velcro or zip, so that it securely stays closed.

          -- More windows!!!

-- Waterproof or add a rain cover (make it optional?)

          -- A little bigger, please!!!

-- Maybe a square base, not rectangular!
