The Outdoor Research Motto Jacket is a descent-inspired soft shell that offers maximum weather protection on bitter cold ski days.

Fully waterproof Ventia™ fabric allows snow to glide right off, while the clean-finished, seam-taped interior slides comfortably over layers

I have had this jacket in all conditions and it holds up like a champ, even when I abuse it. The waterproofness is good, but breathability does suffer a bit due to this. It is to be expected though, and I can live with it. I especially like this in very cold temps (0 degrees F and less) with a patagonia down sweater underneath. I highly recommend this jacket.

I bought this jacket mostly to shield me from heavy winter winds and rain on my commutes and everyday endeavors. It serves that purpose well. The membrane holds up to its waterproof/windproof billing. It is built like a tank and will certainly keep you warm and dry if you are caught walking or standing around in an arctic blast.

I would not recommend this jacket as an outer layer for high-output activities because, as expected, the membrane makes it unbreathable. I broke a sweat in this thing shoveling snow, with the pitzips open. Can't imagine skiing or doing a snow climb with this thing. It would turn into a convection oven.

I subtracted a couple of stars because (1)the front zipper is very difficult to engage initially (though it doesn't snag once you get it started) and (2)the fit is not near as athletic as I was hoping. The cut is not tapered at all to the waist and it's really baggy in the abdomen.

Really though, it's a well-made jacket and one of the few of its kind with a removable hood and hem drawchords. I'd give it a "3.5" if I could.

I purchased this product to use as a casual jacket. The jacket seems generally well made and looks nice. Features like the hood and powder skirt are removable when not needed. The fabric and water-resistant zippers appear to do a good job at keeping wind and water out.

I do have some issues with the jacket that limit its appeal for casual use. It has a thin layer of fleece for lining, which does not provide much insulation. For "around town" use you should expect to need an additional layer near the freezing-point and below. The lining also tends to catch on whatever you're wearing under the jacket, making it slower to put on and take off. The zipper is a little tricky to engage, and since it is coated for water resistance, is slower to operate than a regular zipper due to the increased friction. There are two hand pockets, but they are placed awkwardly towards the sides of the jacket and thus aren't appropriate hand-warming pockets.

Though I say below that I would not recommend this to a friend, I would condition that recommendation based on use. I think this may be an appropriate jacket for skiing, hiking, or other active outdoor use, where the issues I had are less relevant.
