Comments about REI Zip Travel Daypack:
- This is an extremely practical and right-sized travel daypack. I used it every day on a European urban vacation for daytime excursions. It held everything I carried, or purchased, with room left over. Before leaving I had my local shoe repair guy sew on black nylon strapping to the sides above each side pocket to secure my water bottles with hydro-clip carabiners. This didn't interfere with the self-stowing capability. With that modification I know my water will be there when needed, and not fall out. (Worth of modification - about $5; Worth of peace-of-mind - Priceless). This was the only thing preventing me from giving a 5-star rating. I could agree with the reviews about a hydration sleeve, and I have packs with that capability. For where I use this pack, however, that would be overkill, and probably make the price much too expensive for what I needed. - Summary: Great design (just add side-straps), great construction, highly pragmatic.

Comments about REI Zip Travel Daypack:
This is great as both a travel pack and as a day pack. It wouldn't be out of place in the back pack department.Unlike some travel luggage it isn't too bulky and heavy to stow, and it isn't too light and flimsy to use. Unlike almost ALL daypacks found in daypack/backpack departments, it isn't too thick with too many compartments. In this case, LESS is definitely more useful.I use this as my "personal sized" carry-on item on long flights and it is perfect for underseat stowing. I then use it as my knock-around bag at my destination. The fact that I can self-stow it in the zippered lid and then stuff it in my "one bag" [@] without being a space or weight hog is icing on the cake.Unlike some self-stowing daypacks, this has usable, although thin, shoulder straps. No waistbelt or sternum straps to flop around and catch on things. No extraneous inner or outer pockets/organizers where things can get lost. For those worried about extra organization - use Ziplocs, small stuff stacks, etc. to hold things in place. The mesh outer pockets are useful, but not for water bottles; they flop out. I put a Platypus collapsible pint bottle in the lid, so that's not a problem for me. I use the mesh outer pockets for a bandanas, snack, a Marmot Ion windbreaker, nothing that would be a disaster to lose (although I haven't had a problem with the windbreaker squirming out). If you think in those terms, you'll find lots of uses for the mesh pockets. Finally, compare this to the[$]Patagonia Lightweight Daypack. I think REI hit a home-run on their design of this one, and I hope they keep it available in basic black at their bargain price forever. I plan on getting my friends, also bitten with the travel bug, either this or the stowable tote for Christmas.

Comments about REI Zip Travel Daypack:
I bought this for use as a day-pack for a month-long Europe trip. It is lightweight and stowed inside my larger backpack easily. The size really is perfect for day excursions, as my girlfriend and I could stick our rain-jackets and other essentials in the pack. The zippered pocket in the hood was great for smaller items that you might need quick access to. Although nice, we did have some complaints. First, we really would have appreciated a hydration bladder sleeve. Second, the side water-bottle pockets were too shallow and our water-bottles seemed to fall out every time I bent over. Finally, my girlfriend felt that the material on the shoulder-straps was too scratchy to be worn with any top that exposed her shoulders.

Comments about REI Zip Travel Daypack:
Great ultralight, minimalist pack. I originally bought the REI Flash UL backpack, which is very similar, but has a sternum strap and interior pockets. I also find the Flash UL more aesthetically pleasing. All in all, I with they had blended the two designs.

Comments about REI Zip Travel Daypack:
This is a great little pack for the plane ride: Put in all of your munchies for the flight and hang it from a seat pocket in front of you. Then use as a small day pack for short missions at your destination. Due to small size and light weight, kids can carry lighter items to help lighten a parent's load. NOT recommended for those international cities where thieves like to (razor blade) slice into ANY bag that is over the shoulder.

Comments about REI Zip Travel Daypack:
Took this little bag to use as a day pack while traveling in Central America. Worked like a charm. I was able to fit a lightweight pack towel, light shirt, some food and other incidentals with no problem. Smaller water bottles fit great in the outside pockets. Bigger ones fit as well, but if you bend over, they drop right out. Only con was that with the shape of the bag, it can be difficult to get stuff in and out if you have water bottles stuck in the front. Otherwise, I was thrilled with this little bag and loved that i could shove it away at the end of the day. The stow pocket, which ends up as the top pouch on the bag when it's unpacked, is actually quite roomy and i found it handy for thowing odds and ends in, including my small camera.

Comments about REI Zip Travel Daypack:
Bought this little guy a few months back. Great day pack. Really came in handy when I went on a long backpacking trip with some friends. I had this stowed away in my hiking pack with all my other gear. When we finally made camp, we were about a 1/2 mile from a gorgeous river and falls. This pack worked great to carry everything I needed for the short trip to the river. Wish it had a pouch for a bladder, but the 2 water bottle pockets more than make up for it.

This daypack is a gem in that is portable and concealable until ready for use. The REI Zip Travel Daypack is quite functional and comfortable for minimalist use.
The REI Zip Travel Daypack has a nice capacity for its size and weight. It would be significantly improved, however, by adding a couple of interior pockets.

Comments about REI Zip Travel Daypack:
We bought this as a carry on for a trip to Europe with two young kids. It was perfect for stashing all their toys for the flight. Once we got there, this served us well for outings with their jackets, snacks, etc. We've also used it multiple times for our local trips to the beach, zoo, etc. Excellent pack. The only improvement would be to make a better water bottle pocket. As other reviewers pointed out, water bottles fall out of the outside pockets easily.

Comments about REI Zip Travel Daypack:
This is a really versatile, small, light pack. I just lost mine but am thinking about getting another (the flash looks good also). This was my main pack for all these things:
Flight carry-on
Day pack while traveling
Stuff sack/small excursion pack on a 4 day hike
When heading out in the city for the day
Ski pack
Like others pointed out, water bottles fall out when you lean over. If you have a lot of small objects they can be hard to find at the bottom of the pack.
Great pack overall and I highly recommend having a pack to fill this role.
