Comments about REI Nevis Jacket - Women's:
I bought this because of the (finally) zip-off sleeves which solved my usual 'trail-head dilemma', vest or jacket? jacket or vest?, but I ended up liking it for its many other good features.
1) As both a day-hiker and backpacker, I like its slick surface which allows pack straps to slide on and off with ease, something I never knew I was missing until I experienced this luxury.
2) I love its stuffability into small spaces which makes it a perfect daypack companion or ultralight backpacking staple as a very warm layer for morning, evening, or when Southern California chills come up fall through spring.
3) On backpacking trips, it is the perfect size and density to stuff into a sleeping pad stuff sack (12"x9") making an ideal backpacking pillow without having to bring a pillow. It fits nicely in the hood portion of the sleeping bag, not too hard or big, just the right size to keep my neck comfortable, back or side sleeping.
4) Functioning like pit zips, the sleeves can be partially unzipped to allow for ventilation without removing the sleeves entirely.
5) I'm a cold person, and this keeps me warm in most moving situations. I would still want a good down jacket or another layer if I were sitting around camp in late fall through early spring. Is perfect evening wear in summer.
6) I am often off trail, and have worried about snagging it on a branch. But so far, even through the thickets, it hasn't torn yet. Not sure if its just luck, or if it's tough fabric.
7) I'm usually a size 8, 120 lbs, 36A with broad shoulders and not much of a waist. I often vacillate between a Sm or Med. In this jacket, the size small is perfect.
8) Would love left or right indicators on the sleeves so I would know where to start zipping them back on (yes, it's cold now, I've taken the jacket off, and am trying to zip the sleeves back on...did I say it was dusk too?). Would totally love matching (over) pants for hiking when I wish I would have worn a base layer, for morning/evening wear or backpacking jammies when I have to get out of my cozy down bag to pee (that would include a zip-through crotch so to stay warm through the whole process). A zip off hood would be nice too.

I've worn the jacket camping in so Cal in Feb. - great at night when it cools down - then I've worn it skiing in Tahoe - great wind resistance - could use a hood, but overall worked on its own for skiing on a 35 degree day - might need a shell for colder weather. Worn the jacket around town - so light and comfortable! Perfecct for all the things I've used it for so far.... great color green (last years model) - so overall a great jacket!

Great jacket: warm and lightweight. Great for unpredictable spring weather where you might need a jacket at 10:00 but not at 12:00. Fits in a stuff sack and takes up little space in your pack.

I've been looking for a warm layer to wear under a waterproof shell during snowboarding. I get cold easily and wanted something versatile for warmer days too. With zip-off sleeves, this jacket can be converted to a vest. The Primaloft insulation is much less bulky than down and warmer than fleece. It even fits under my softshell jacket nicely. I wore it first on a 4-day trip to Whistler, BC, and realized this was exactly what had been missing from my outdoor recreation attire. It was incredibly breathable on the more challenging slopes, and kept me warm on the long chair lifts. The jacket will be great for camping during chilly weather. It is slightly water resistant. It's not designed to be the outermost layer during windy and wet weather. It works best as the middle layer - over a wicking/base layer and under a weather proof shell.

I'm sure I'm not using this jacket to its fullest potential, but I have been sufficiently impressed so far. When I'm getting dressed for some outdoor adventure, I always have to compromise between starting cold and being comfortable after I get going. This provides an effective solution: it is lightweight and comfortable and comes with a handy little stuff sack so that once you warm up you can zip of the sleeves or just pack the whole thing away. Plus, I get lots of compliments on the green color.

Maybe the ideal jacket for anything short of a flat-out thunderstorm. Soft rain (mostly what we get here in southern Calif) will bead up on it. Very warm considering it's super lightweight. Remove the sleeves in a jiffy and stuff 'em into the pockets. Whole thing will cram down to the size of a hefty baked potato and fit in a good purse. For manufacturer's consideration: howzabout a hooded version ???

Comments about REI Nevis Jacket - Women's:
I use this jacket for travel, hiking, walking the dog, geocaching, and casual nights out. I purchased it mostly due to the sleeves being removable. My only disappointment is that it needs to be worn with a shell in the rain. However, since it is fitted and not bulky that doesn't create a problem. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a jacket that provides warmth, wind protection, and the option to wear sleeves or not.

I can wear this stylish jacket to work and go from work right to the beach or zip off the sleeves and go hiking and it is just what I need!
